The Milano of the south.

Here are some pictures I found on the internet of Bari, Italy. This is the town my family comes from, and it is known as the Milano of the south, due to the fact it is the financial centre of the south, fashion capital of the south, etc. Enjoy a look at Bari. Notice all the apartments. Hardly anyone lives in houses there. Infact all my family members there live in apartment complexes like you see in the pics.

Nice pics, Mike! I've never actually been to Bari myself.

It has nothing to do with looking like Milano

They call it the Milan of the south, because it is the financial centre of the south(Milan in the financial centre of the country), and the fashion capital of the south(Milan is the fashion capital of the country), etc. Infact many people buy their clothing in Bari, because you get all the designer clothing you get in Milan for a fraction of the price.

Bari is in the process of restoring their entire downtown district.

One of the projects is restoring Corso Cavour. This is what it will look like.

It's great to see a city not that polished or prettified but beautiful and real. Wonderful pictures.

Gotcha, I see where they're going with that. I was actually thinking it looked prettier than milano (aside from the duomo)... beautiful city, I hope to visit someday.

Some parts look nice. But there are also lots of areas with nothing but those commie block 60's looking apartments that really look like they have seen better days

Other then that, they do have some nice buildings and stuff. And good food

Some more pics.

Nice town, but I'd say Napoli is the financial capital of the south, the "Milano"...

Cool! I am almost positive that a pair of my great-grandparents came from Bari. In fact when our family still ran a neighborhood grocery, we had food improted from Bari.

That sounds pretty much right. Most of the immigration into the USA and Canada from Italy, was from Southern Italy, as in the Bari Region and other areas of the south, as these were the poor areas. The North was always pretty well off and so people did not leave as much.

I know in Toronto's case alone, over 60% of Italian immigrants to the city came from southern Italy, like the Bari Region.

The town my dad comes from which is just outside Bari City limits no joke would probably be double the size it is today if all the people who immigrated just to Toronto stayed there

Nice photos of Bari, it's a nice city. Did you go to Brindisi or Taranto as well ? How about Alberobello ?

Just a correction: a lot of northern italians also emigrated in the past, but many of them went to south-america instead of north-america. Brazil has a lot of people with northern italian descent and as well as italian neighborhoods and towns.

That's nice, but Bari is not in Abruzzo.

Bari is in Puglia...and between Abruzzo and Puglia its Molise.
