You maybe deceive yourself,or you deceived by someone.Shenzhen is the most modern city in China,beacause it is near hongkong,I have ever stayed in Shenzhen 0ne year.I saw lots of bad conditions like that,why do you not recognize?

You are talking about the countryside? If you are talking about countryside, most of mainland china is in that condition or worst as you said.

Well, this is not that bad, as compared to the pollution smoke out capital of Hebei, the province Beijing resides. At least the air is less toxic.

There is an obscure beauty to it. In one way you want to see it paved over for modernization but in another you kinda want to protect it, because you know soon this way of life may be gone forever...

I don't think so.Nobody miss this style of shanty towns.It's not China's traditional style.It's only the style of shanty town.

It doesn't mean China's traditional style is like this.

and of course, markets are usually dirtier, and those pictures were taken from street markets I believe.
