Tiny quibble...the Model A was produced from '27 to '31. Some color in its palette--though there was a color actually called [Something] Drab--but not as much color as the '35s, which were trimmed either as standards or DeLuxes...

^^^^Thanks, I've corrected the posting.

When I wrote it I had found a Model A chart picture (off Worthpoint) but they do something to make it impossible to link to their pictures, so I hunted around and found the 1935 chart but forgot to update the text.

In any case, lots of colors besides black :-)

There are three pages of posts that include the word "Thompson" but I didn't see the following rppc. (real picure post card)


Written on the left:..."Hotel de Thompson"...July 12th, 1906.

The location was listed as Hollywood Calif.




Here's a larger/closer look.




I thought the garage had undergone an odd renovation with that skinny door but that's not the case. Upon closer inspection. .it's just that the garage door isn't shut all the way.


I haven't been able to fiigure out where, in Hollywood, this 'hotel' was located.

Hmmmm, e_r . . . there is a Gordian knot here which will take some time and ingenuity to untangle.

"Hotel de Thompson" was a jocular designation in the late 1870s and 1880 for the L.A. city jail, as drunks and so on were said to be staying at the "Hotel de Thompson" after arrest, the "Thompson" giving his name to this being Sheriff James Santiago Thompson, a colorful Angeleno rich in interest, first in L.A. in 1850; but I'll just mention that he was first (if I understand correctly) appointed to the Sheriff's office by the Board of Supervisors in 1858 upon the violent death of Sheriff Getman, who had been shot down by one Reed, near the corner of "Beaudry's building" (as reported), reputed insane. Now, Sheriff Thompson had a house on the grounds of Rancho La Brea in the 1850s; but the photo reference is from 1906, and what's more I'm not certain that he is the Judge Thompson who cut quite a figure in L.A. in the 1870s-1880s, and whose house was not in Hollywood but rather "on Figueroa street, between Washington and Adams" (LA Herald, 5/18/1875). The photo's reference to "Hotel de Thompson" could just be a jocular and somewhat dated "old Angeleno" reference to the residence of some otherwise unrelated Thompson in Hollywood; or . . . [mind whirls with theories] . . .

I'm assuming they were filming something downtown? Last month there were period cars like these parked along Cherokee Ave. between Hollywood Blvd. and Selma Ave. in front of Boardner's, specifically. I tried searching online to find out what they may have been filming there, but wasn't able to find even a hint.

This interesting photograph was recently listed on eBay




eBay for search purposes:.... Laurel Canyon Blvd. Bridge - Feb. 26, 1929



It appears the bridge is newly finished. There are a group of workmen on the right edge of the photograph and, if you look closely, there are two workers on the opposite side of the bridge near the fine looking house.





Here are the two men on the far side of the bridge. . . as well as a closer look at the house.

I took Laurel Canyon Blvd. daily when I first moved to Lo Angeles and I don't remember driving over any bridge on Laurel Canyon Blvd. that was remotely like this one.

What happened to it?

Hancock was the brand of gasoline, not a signifier of the location. Bob's was at 1230 W Olympic Blvd, the sec of Blaine Street. The tall building in the background is the Mayfair Hotel at Seventh and Hartford, which I think like those wheelcycles we've seen on NLA before.

I didn't notice the HANCOCK sign on the station. My reference is the source of my misinformation. Sorry for millionth time.
