How did we all miss this? This should have been like breaking news. I guess the libs would be back in the house now that they’ve got 8?

They have 6 per the article. They vacated 2 seats on Ottawa area that have byelections coming up so they could be back to 8 before spring.

Now Ford’s gonna be in a panic mode.

If the liberals have 8, they regain the official status and get to come back to Queen’s Park. That’s so not going to bode well with Ford.

I don't know what you mean about coming back to Queens Park. They are in the House, they just aren't an official party. They will have 8 members, he has 73. Whether a Liberal can question a minister isn't going to mean squat to him.

They’ve always been in the house? Okay never mind then.

Party status is 12 seats, not 8.

Was it Ford that changed it?

Yes the current government changed it to 12.

The Ontario Liberal Party leadership convention is on March 7, 2020. Any predictions?

Yep, I had forgotten about that. It makes sense since that was what party status was when the legislature was this large before it was cut down to generally follow the federal ridings in 1999. Party status was dropped to 8 to reflect the lower number of seats, but gradually, each election, more seats were added so that we are closing in on the 130 there was for the 1995 election. The article I read said party status was actually 10% of the seats, so if a couple more seats are added, party status would be 13 if they rounded up.

Going to be an interesting race between Mitzie Hunter and Steven Del Duca I think. My prediction is Mitzie wins because she is a current MPP, has basically as much senior cabinet experience as Del Duca. I think being a black woman compared to a white man helps as well.

I’ve also heard that people hate the Wynne - Del Duca - (somebody else) brand...

For sure, but what are they gonna do? They have 3 former Wynne cabinet ministers and 3 others who nobody outside their home towns have ever heard of. Michael Coteau might be seen as less tarnished by the Wynne brand because he was a lower level cabinet minister. Like Mitzie, at least he's a current MPP.

interesting that John Tory was being pushed as a possible candidate, considering he was the disastrous leader of the PC party more than a decade ago. Would have been an interesting turn of events if he ran and won though. Then Toronto needs a new mayor, and that's the job Doug Ford really wants anyway, so maybe he steps down as Premier lol. Not like he wants to run and lose against Tory in another election anyway lol

2 byelections (both in Ottawa) are happening today. They are all considered Liberal strongholds (from CP24).

I'm pretty sure that the elimination of the 50/50 cost sharing happened under either Harper or Martin? It's a long-term issue.

Private members bill has passed second reading to pass a law to keep Ontario on daylight savings time year round. The government supports the bill. If passed, it would only take effect if Quebec and New York passed similar laws. Watch Quebec decide to stay on standard time year round lol. I wonder if those jurisdictions are actually looking at this? I can't imagine New York only looks at Ontario or Quebec on this. I would have to think that a large chunk of other states around them would have to agree as well. But I also think that if they do go for it, it will lead to a cascade of other eastern time zone states going along as well.
