A year ago, my knowledge of L.A. history and architecture was very limited. I love taking my 6th graders on the Metrolink from Orange (city in the county of same name), to LAUS for annual walking tours of downtown L.A. We walk from Union Station, Olvera Street, through the civic center, up Temple to Grand, throught the Music Center, Wells Fargo, Westin Bonaventure, Central Library, and catch Red Line at 7th St. back to LAUS and Metrolink home. (whew, whirlwind description of my tour.) But I seldom get to go back and visit other areas or know what I'm looking at until I started following this forum. How did I find you? After my last trip with the class in Feb 2012, one of the viewers of my photo show commented that his dad used to work at the Hall of Records. I did a Google search and wound up viewing a photo of the old Hall of Records on your forum. My good fortune began then! Thanks to all of YOU, over most of the last year I have been studying and learning so much about the history of L.A. via this forum and have gone back as many times as I could to go outside my box, take pictures, look for some still standing buildings, and post some of my photos here. The first time I'm posting some pictures here was back in April. (post #7286).
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I'm still reading all the pages and haven't caught up to the present yet but what a ride! I save many photos to my hard drive so I can look at them off line. I love the "then and now" photos that some many of you do! I have a lot more to say but I have to stop for now. Merry Christmas and Joy to the World to all of you. I come here every day and enjoy the community almost as much as my FB friends. Thanks ER for founding this and keeping it going!

The wall and the stone stairway remain, but the house - it seems not. If that's the same house, it's been severely remodeled.

The house's stonework does pretty much match the Hollywoodland gates and the form is correct too. This must be the place.

One of the two or three oldest homes in LA, the 1834 Andreas Pico (younger brother of the governor) adobe as it appeared in 1876.

Actually, Anthony had the Greene brothers build the house at Wilshire and Berendo--I think the Talmadge replaced it, although its footprint may have been a bit father south on Berendo. I can't remember if Anthony moved it to BH or if the next owner, actor Norman Kerry--did. It's still at 910 N Bedford, clinker brick and all...

According to the L.A. County Assessor's website, the current house was built in 1965.

It wasn't moved far from it's original location on Long Beach blvd. (the blvd. is at left)



It's somewhere in the park shown above. The googlemobile photos are terrible (murky day) so it's a bit frustrating.

And while I admittedly don't know what the rest of the right-of-way looks like, it's safe to say we have permanently given up any option of using the tunnel as a part of an urban transit line......

Thankfully I am pretty sure they have stopped such "progress" in Orange County....which is to say that while parts of the P.E. ROW have been leased out to easily-removed warehouses and such, I don't think they don't allow 5-story apartment buildings to be built on it.....

After all.....you never know when you might need it again. You just never know......

As mentioned earlier, Google Street View sucks in that area - you can see the depot on MLK at Carson Dr., but there's a haze over the street view camera that makes for a crappy picture, especially with a tree blocking the view.

However, Bing Maps also has a street-level view feature, and their picture is much better:

The Bonaventure Hotel sealed the old tunnel's fate long ago - they blocked it off at that point for foundation construction.

I grew up in Silverlake area on a circle street on a hill. In the late 40's there was in the middle of the circle one house and property that occupied half of the land in the circle. It belonged to a lone woman who had a chauffeur driven Lincoln Continental. Her name was Mrs. Fox and was elderly. i was always told that it was the wife of the Fox Studio Fox. Since that time some of the property has been subdivided, address is 1623 Elevado St. 90026. House is large with a separate garage and servants quarters. I would say 1920's construction or earlier. Anybody know anything about it.

That would have been Charles A Fox and his wife Maude, but it doesn't look like there was a connection to Fox studios, at least at first blush.
