I really hate the cliche phrase so often used on this site "I think we should wait till this building is completed to pass judgement." but with this one it really applies. In fact, it might take a few years to see how the concrete is going to look in the long term. I don't know. I go back and fourth so much on this building, it hurts my head.

Also, found some hilarious comments about the tower in this recent article about the sale of the penthouse http://www.independent.co.uk/news/bu...s-8760324.html
I don't think most people realize the tower isn't done yet... lol.

New Core jump, This is one of the quickliest, they've done so far. I think the last one was last thursday afternoon, so it is six days and five working days excluding sunday.

In other news, it seems that they are FINALLY MOVING THE 57th STREET CAMERA, but not as we thought, placing it higher, but farther away, exactly two blocks away, actually, the 57th St. camera no longer exist, and you can see that now there is a button for a 59th Street camera, although it is not yet in service.

OMG Those comments were startling, and interesting in their own way. Seems like their view of NYC is that it's a dangerous, dirty, place filled with illegals, horrid Jews, and super rich Liberals, and anyone with money apparently gets it through shady means? I thought the Europeans were more "enlightened" than us not more bigoted, ignorant and prejudiced. Lot of their comments made the average American Liberal look like a Conservative Tea Bagger in comparison lol. How dare anyone have any money! "Redistribute" it now! Egads. Really?

^ I wouldn't say they're Europeans. It's an online article. Commenters could be from anywhere.

Based on their English and what they said, I'd say most of them are actually Americans.

A lot of them identified themselves as Europeans. But anyway, it made me think of the line from Annie Hall "Don't you see the rest of the country looks upon New York like we're left-wing, communist, Jewish, homosexual pornographers? I think of us that way sometimes and I live here."

They're mostly American conservatives.

That explains some things. For I could understand that Europeans might think that NYC was "unsafe" compared to some of their cities, but many in the US, like some I speak to in Tulsa still might hold the perception that NYC is unsafe, though it is not (homicide rates are lower than they are in my hometown of Tulsa for instance).

I think those crazy comments are mostly from Europeans. They're writing in "British English", for the most part.

Hey New Yorkers: what's the view like from the SW corner of 56th & 5th Avenue? I'm hoping to get a view of it from a distance so you can see its height in relation to the surrounding buildings.

Seeing the perimeter beam reinforcement shows the large sizes of the bars that make it up. I have read earlier, that the column reinforcement is made up of #20 bars, which are 2 1/2 inch diameter threaded bars. Those are big, indeed.

The exterior climbing forms are interesting, in how the spandrels and the two halves of the columns fold open to allow climbing, then are closed to form the spandrels and columns, rendering a smooth finish to the concrete.

Both the 57 Street and Park Avenue cams need to be readjusted. The top of the building is nearly out of view. There will ultimately be a limit to the adjustability of the 57 Street cam, as 432 Park Avenue rises above the mounting position (which I believe is mounted to the Four Seasons Hotel across the street). Being that the Park Avenue cam is positioned diagonally across Park Avenue on the southeast corner, it may follow the progress better.

Forrest Dweller,

I agree with you: I find the logistics of construction very interesting, and like seeing the ground action on 56 Street (concrete and material delivery) as well. Unfortunately, instead of re-adjusting the two cams I mention earlier, they repositioned the 56 Street cam slightly upward, cutting off the view of the street, and the near western corner of the site. There is activity taking place, with what appears to be scaffolding being erected on the west side of the site (adjacent to the opening beside the new building) that was started on Friday. Just then the 56 Street cam was moved, so this new activity is now out of sight. The previous view was better for overall view of the ground action.

Somebody needs to talk to the person (or persons) responsible for positioning the cams.
The current perimeter beam reinforcement is now the 24th one above the lobby. The core is between the 27th and 28th. It looks like the 57th Street cam is going to be moved to 59th Street. I find it interesting what you said over on SSC about the cranes being changed when the building gets taller.

Enough social commentary folks, restrict your discussion to the building.

Thumbs up

I find this 432 Park Avenue a splendid tower. I worked briefly at OM Ungers in Berlin and the square ( quadratisch ) was their trademark until now. Rafael Viñoly has really made his mark with this elegant massing and genious simplification. I love it !

"Genius" is such an overused word, with all due respect. (Although I appreciate the irony of your misspelling it.)

Can someone please post a photo from a distance showing the building in its environment?

I have to drive 450 miles to find any tower over 450' and here's one in Midtown that looks tiny. For most of us, the current building would just tower over everything. Really goes to show just how impressive and dense Manhattan is.

Can't wait to see this thing break through. It was really exciting seeing One57 break through the canopy. I'm sure this will as well.

And here it is, the new 59th Street cam. It seems it is located at the top of Bloomberg Tower (59th and Lexington) But I think it is not well aimed yet, I can't find the building.

Drawing a line between Bloomberg Tower and 30 Rock (located at the right border of the picture) in Google Earth, it pass just off the corner of Park Ave and 56th Street, so the building should be slightly to the right of the picture (but not in it)
