This book does a great job of exploring the city's skyscrapers through the ages, as well as some of our recently completed supertalls like One57 and 432 Park Avenue. It also touches on some of the supertalls currently under construction. It's the most complete collection to date on the rich skyscraper history and legacy that only New York City has so much of. I highly recommend it to any skyscraper fan. We all need to look up more, and not just at what's under construction.

Funny you mention that, just a couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon that book on amazon. They have it in supply since June. The German edition is named "NY Skyscrapers: Über den Dächern von New York City" (30€).



I do believe it's worth buying.

You won't be disappointed. It puts everything going on now into perspective. I like books in general, and I love skyscraper books, and no other city has the history with skyscrapers that New York does. There was a time where at one point the bulk of the tallest buildings in the world was in New York.

Today's world is so different, with the tallest buildings now being built in multiple places around the world. It's unlikely any one city will ever dominate like that again. But in New York, the next few years will see a jump in the number of supertalls, raising the profile of the skyline once again.

I live in BedStuy Brooklyn. Every night before I wrap up my day, I walk our dog. Monty is a Golden Retriever who loves to explore! Recently, I realized that I can see the “super tall” 432 Park Avenue throughout our walks and occasionally when I drive over the weekends. I wonder if it is only about height? Maybe yes, maybe no. 432 Park Avenue is a tall building, in fact tallest residential building in NYC. Here are some facts:

Address: 432 Park Avenue
Number of Floors: 85 (above ground) + 3 (below ground)
Height: 1,369 ft (424 m)
Design Architect: Rafael Vinoly

Being curious I used NYC’s Open Data and created a 3-D model. The model consists of all buildings in NYC with their 3-D shapes and the elevation model of NYC. What I wanted to know is which streets have visibility to 432 Park Avenue tower. I used ArcGIS to utilize a viewshed analysis and clipped the results to NYC street data. Voila! Pretty visible – Although the tower is in a dense area of Manhattan, its unique slender shape and location makes it visible from all boroughs. Enough said, enjoy the map!

Here's an interesting screenshot from the video... it shows that the 57th street towers will be significantly more visible than the Empire State building, which we kinda all knew, but it's nice to be able to put an objective number on it:
