I recently came across these two snapshots on eBay. (the seller is asking $150.00)

I've enlarged them for you.

As I was finishing my post, I came across information about a second Lasky Ranch. This one was called 'Lasky Mesa' ranch.

I'm curious about several things.

Here's a detail of the lower right edge of the photograph. I think that's a Café sign (red arrow). -and what is 'Challange' advertising? ice_something

detail

Ice cream, certainly. Their product line seems to be just butter and cream cheese now, but Challenge is still very much a going concern. I recognized the logo immediately as it's not much different today:

http://challengedairy.com/

Challenge butter is a common sight in supermarkets around here; I assumed it was well-known so I was a little surprised you didn't recognize them.

Regarding Bellevue Courts, last spring I did some research and even made a map of historic bungalow courts in Pasadena:

NRHP bungalow courts in Pasadena

Bellevue Court was built in 1916 in Colonial Revival style and consists of 8 individual units, plus one two-story triplex at the back. It was included in a 1983 group nomination of 27 bungalow courts to the National Register of Historic Places. It was determined eligible but was not added to the NRHP due to the owner's objection.

Thank you. I hadn't remembered those extraordinary, branching flues at all. What a contrast with the new freeway exchange.

Apparently they were not original:

...but, they're in all the 1950s pix:

No boarding house on Bunker Hill would be complete without a bit of death and mayhem. In 1906, Charles Malan, a Frenchman suffering from consumption and depleted funds, did himself in by sealing off all the doors and cracks of his room and turning on the gas.

Then there is the sad story of Frederick Merrill, an 87 year old inventor and resident who slipped on a banana peel on Main Street and died from his injuries a couple of weeks later.

Finally, in 1943 a fight broke out in the hotel's lobby and Mrs. Mae Perry, the hotel manager, broke up the scuffle...with a gun. Rubio Ernesto, 17 and not a hotel guest was killed in the incident.

Here's the same area in the mid-40s. I found the picture below in an article called Burbankers Remember on wesclark.com. About halfway down the page is a section titled "The Ranch (1946), by Richard Dixon", which details how, as an eleven-year-old boy, Richard witnessed the filming of A Boy and His Dog on the movie ranch managed by his father. To whet your appetites, here are a couple of the early paragraphs:
This ranch had once been the Lasky-Paramount movie ranch back in the very early days of film making. Cecil B. DeMille once shot parts of Squaw Man (1914) there. Also, D.W. Griffith shot scenes for Intolerance (1916) here as well. The studio moved most of the standing sets up the coast to Agora in 1924 and opened the new Paramount Ranch there, but this entire area remained a film shooting location and on this day the movie was being shot, literally, right in our front yard.

My father had taken a job as manager of part of this movie ranch which was just across the L.A. River from Warner Brothers Studio. We lived up at the foot of Mt. Lee, just over the crest from the Hollywood sign. We were on the east side of the mountain facing the San Fernando Valley. It was the end of my Catalina Street adventure and the beginning of another very special time of my childhood.

wesclark.com

The author also provides a 2012 image of the area here. I chose to do my own.

The Los Angeles Country Club (mentioned many times on the thread, this is just a tiny recap) was started as the Los Angeles Golf Club in 1897 on land that is now centered on Alvarado Terrace. Too cramped, LACC briefly moved to 16th (Venice) and Hobart, then on to the nearby premises shown on the map below, at the NW corner of Pico and Western, where they built their first 18-hole course. In 1911 LACC decamped to West LA, to a parcel just north of 20th-Century Fox studios, where they remain. The grounds of the club's former premises were platted into house lots and built out.

Eleven years later (compare with the map immediately above):

Baist, plate No. 17, 1921 (detail)

This photo taken looking north towards Hollywood up Western from Pico in 1898 gives an idea of the lay of the land before anything was built. Just two years later, LACC will take over an irregularly-shaped parcel on the left, siting their clubhouse near the intersection. After the club departed, this area was converted to residential use and became known as Country Club Park:

The same view today:

"Harvard College", later "Harvard School" and now Harvard-Westlake, (the school has also come up multiple times on the thread) was established, originally as a military school, in 1900 at the site shown on the first map above, at W 16th St (Venice Blvd) and Western. Thirty-seven years later, thwarted in their attempt to move to Westwood, they relocated to the defunct Hollywood Country Club grounds at the Valley end of Coldwater Canyon. The school's former location is now Western Plaza Shopping Center. There's a big Food 4 Less there, a CVS, a Factory 2U and some other shops.

The original Harvard College/School building, "Harvard Hall", by Arthur Burnette Benton (1900), faced on Western Avenue:

Today the site is Western Plaza Shopping Center:

The Good Shepherd House is a Catholic charity which provided, and still provides, services to women and their children. As part of their mission, they ran a girls' high school on the northern end of their property from 1905 until 1977. When the school ceased operations, the land was sold to LAUSD. Pio Pico Middle School is there now and uses two of the historic structures from the former high school. Good Shepherd retreated to the southern end of the property at the corner of Arlington and Venice behind a big hedge. The Sisters continue to maintain a shelter for victims of domestic violence:

gsv

Good Shepherd (SW corner with pool below) now shares its original site with Pio Pico Middle School:

gvs

The streets surrounded by Good Shepherd, LACC and Harvard School were built with large homes of wood and stucco during the first two decades of the last century. Good brick apartments and 4-plexes provided infill in the 1920s. More modern apartments have replaced many of the homes. About twelve of the original houses remain on S Wilton Place, between Pico and Venice, most in good repair.

This one, for example, from 1910 is at No. 1422:

gsv

Another at No.1527, also from 1910, features an unusual roof line:

One of the 1920s apartments is No. 1310 (1927):

A generous four-plex (1922) at No. 1321:

All thx go to Beaudry. He's the one who so generously gave us the info re building permit searches. I put that one up so he'd know I do pay attention....sometimes :-)

(now if the city would just cross-reference them by architect & contractor!)
You are a god send! Thanks so much t2 & Beaudry for the history lesson! I tried so hard to look for old pictures of my old middle school "Pio Pico Span School", but all I could find was just information that I already knew. I know the school used to be an all girls catholic school owned by the "Sisters of the Good Sheperd" and that they still use two of the former buldings (the gym & the rose cottage). The only new information I came across was a possible name (Pelletier High School). During the time I worked there afterschool, I would hear rumors of the rose cottage being haunted by a little girl and a monk in a robe. I tried looking for some pictures of the school, but ended up empty handed. I think I might stop by the actual Sisters place and ask for some information. I also once worked at that Food4Less on that plaza (Venice and Western), so I frequented that place many times. All the houses you pointed out on my block are fascinating and have always caught my attention. Thank you very much for the history lesson.

" As Mark rounds the corner to the front of the store, we see a hitchhiker. A mechanic in white overalls exits the store with a bottle or canister of some type in his hand and promptly, intentionally drops it in the street's gutter as Mark passes, then the mechanic simply walks off."

It was called Pelletier HS (I'll add the name to my original post). I wish I knew more about Rose Cottage being haunted.

I'm glad you liked that post. I had fun with it as I hardly ever focus on that area. Many thx for the new, first-hand info.

...but it took me a bit longer to spot the actual mural.

I found a match to the white house in the first slide and viola there's the mural (on the right) partially hidden by new construction.

When I first saw this photo I wondered if they designed the left aide of
this mural to resemble a rolodex card with the Frank's Liquor tab and then
subsequent info, but the current photo shows the building is designed like
that, so maybe not.
