Stockholm - The days of old

I figured it was time for a thread dedicated to Stockholm in the past..
so here are some shots from the late 1800's til the 1920's sadly many of the buildings in this threads were dimolished to make way for new ones... I can partially understand them since allot of them were shantys... but the few ones remaining are highly priced and sought for

anways... I got these photos from: http://www.stockholmskallan.se/

whilst lowering the level of a street they did some archeological findings

Stockholm international fair 1897 or wich ever year it was?

patriotism?

the two first scrapers of europe got errected at each end of this bridge viewof them

the elevator is still there in a new form. the buildings below it are gone

the reichtag

city hall under construction

and some bonus aerials

as you see old makes room for the new

http://www.stockholmskallan.se/

hope you enjoyed the tour

Wow, amazing!

Every time I look at old pictures of cities it amazes me how many more decrepid and worn-down buildings there were back then compared to now.

Fascinating pics.

^^
the white building is not there anymore... it's a wooden palace/exebitionhall build for the international fair... it was torn down afterwards... the two minareths in the front apparently had elevators and visiters could go up in them... the building was around 100 meters tall according to wikipedia

better view of it

Stockholm looked a little grubby back then. Somehow I would've thought it to be more "imperial". Still, what a treat seeing the past so plain and simple. Thanks.

^That's a difficult one. I'd guess it's near Skanstull, just to the east of the lock. But also maybe somewhere along Karlbergskanalen. Don't think a single one of those buildings are left, so kinda hard to tell.

@soleri - Stockholm, just like Sweden in general, was just a poor smallish place on the morthern frines of Europe way into the 1800s. The time of the Swedish Empire was centuries earlier. Stockholm was at one point (iirc ~1800) one of the most dangerous cities in Europe and possibly the one with most bars per person. More people died than were born here pretty much from the founding all the way into the 1800s. Stockholm/Sweden/Scandinavia wasn't always the clean, socialdemocratic, modern places place it is today.

For those wanting newer pics (there's of course also old threads, just look back a few pages) here's the elevator (Katarinahissen)

and the Riksdag

Both pics from chema92 on Flickr

Much of the shanty buildings didn,t disappear until the large renewal of Stockholm during the 1950-80, lots of buildings from the late 19th century lacked both gas and bathrooms up untill the 1970th, my mom had a friend who lived in one of those buildings and the entire building shared the toilets located outside on the backyard in a shed together with the lavatory. Their fireplace didn't get gas until 1974 and they didn't get a proper bathroom until 1975, this building is located in central Stockholm and today a typical apartment in that building goes between 300-600.000 US. Back then they were rentals and cost something like 50 US a month.
