I have a friend who lives in this area - about five or ten minutes south of Morumbi Shopping mall. I visited him back in 2000 and I cannot believe how much has changed since then. Truly amazing. Thanks for sharing!

In this picture alone I am seeing lots of new stuff. For example, those on-ramps are new. Are they part of an expanded expressway system? From what I remember, Sao Paulo really did not have much in the way of expressways. Also, the building that has HP on it used to say Compaq. What about that building on the far left - off in the distance, it is kind of a pale yellow color, did that building ever get completed. I seem to remember my friend telling me that they halted construction because the building was too tall for its location, as it was in the flight path for the airport (the inner-city airport).

That building you are mentioning it's the Mandarin, a luxury condo completed last year ( if we're talking about the same building, lol).

Yes, the tall building that has HP on it used to say Compaq some years ago.

About the new ramps, I really don't know.

well, no.

there are not many germans nor italians in Brasil.

what there is a LOT is GERMAN and ITALIAN descendants

Germans and italian descendants are more predominant in southern Brazil. São Paulo has many, many more italian descendants... the richest family in São Paulo in the beginning of the century was the Matarazzo family... the first skyscraper in São Paulo (33 floors, 1928) was the Martinelli building...

Of course, since they are all DESCENDANTS, that wouldnt really change the panorama of foreign companies in the country, although Volkswagen and FIAT are two of the most popular car brands in the country.

what do you consider good pay for a 3rd world country???? Salaries may not be high, but brazilians, BY LAW, have public free healthcare, public free schools and universities, social welfare, 1 month of vacations per year, one extra month of payment in the end of the year, etc, etc, etc. The legislation is very pro-worker.

On the other hand, due to excess of unskilled labor and low economic growth, salaries are low.

and no, there is no virtual slave labor.

An amazing city. Those overhead shots were great. I'd love to take a helicopter tour of the city for a few hours. Thanks for the thread Mary.

height restrictions. All over Brazil. Stupid brazilian urbanists. Tallest in the city was built in the 70s. Then tall buildings were forbidden.
