Might be a dumb question but here goes anyway. When I watch Oilers games the ice and arena seem different than other arenas. I know its not my tv bc I've noticed it at bars and friends houses. I've heard that edmonton has the best ice in the nhl. To me it seems as if it stays smoother like glass whereas other arenas get choppy and snowy. Anyway I hope that effect will carry over to the new arena.

Rexall is known to have some the best ice in the league. Being a facility with both the Oilers and Oil Kings using the ice on a regular basis, it gets a lot of attention without being overused like a typical community rink.

During commercial breaks at Oiler games, a full crew comes out with shovels and scrapes the snow from the entire sheet, rather than just around the boards and around the crease/slot areas like they used to. This definitely restores some of the glossy look that shows up on TV.

Something else that might make Rexall Place look a bit different on TV is it is the only NHL arena that has the benches on the same side as the TV cameras. So in every other NHL arena, watching on TV you will see the players faces on the bench on the opposite side of the ice, whereas televised games at Rexall have the TV viewer looking at the backs of the players as they're on the bench. Thus, it's also the only arena that has the logo at center ice facing the players bench, rather than away.

Oilers now worth $455 million, reports Forbes magazine
When it comes to operating an National Hockey League team in Edmonton, a franchise-altering event happened in May 2013 when Edmonton city council approved the deal to build a new downtown arena.

Since that time, according to Forbes magazine’s annual valuation of NHL teams, the value of the Edmonton Oilers has shot up from $225 million to a peak of $475 in 2014.

New community rink to be named for Edmonton Oilers coaching great Glen Sather

JIM MATHESON, EDMONTON JOURNAL

Glen Sather rarely ran short on words in his time with the Edmonton Oilers, but he was almost at a loss for them Thursday at a city celebration saluting the architect of the Oilers dynasty.

After Mayor Don Iveson proclaimed Dec. 11 Glen Sather Day and presented the former Oilers coach and general manager with a small steel sculpture of a bison, the Oilers announced a million dollar donation by team owner Daryl Katz to the Edmonton downtown community arena.

The rink will be named in Sather’s honour. It is a part of the new downtown arena complex and will be used for community hockey programs when the Oilers and junior Oil Kings, among others, aren’t using it as a practice facility.

“I’m shocked to have a hockey arena named after me,” Sather said to the audience gathered at the Winspear Centre.

“To do this in Glen’s name is fitting and it’ll serve as a lasting tribute to his tremendous legacy in Oil Country,” said Bob Nicholson, the head of the Oilers Entertainment Group.
