Soldier Shot, Parliament Hill Attacked

Wtf...

A man with a rifle shot a soldier standing guard at the War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, and witnesses said there were further shots fired on Parliament Hill nearby.

It was not immediately known if there were further injuries.

Alain Merisier. who works at the cafeteria in the Parliament building, told CBC News that said he saw a man in a car at the Centre Block with a long gun.

Witnesses said they then heard shots fired, and there was an unconfirmed report of a person injured outside the Library of Parliament.

Police confirmed the shooting at the War Memorial, and sealed off the area while the injured soldier was given emergency medical aid. He was later put into an ambulance.

I've been calling people I know who are downtown - thankfully everyone is safe.

The police and RCMP are trained professionals and I'm certain this madness will be put to a swift end.

2-3 shooters, 1 shot dead by sgt at arms apparently.

1 may be rooftop with a rifle... but may be a sniper from RCMP

Such a sad day for Canada. I hope they catch the other shooters and there will be no more casualties.

Anything federal is locked down, all bases across Canada closed to public, most of downtown is blocked off, all bridges across Ottawa River are closed.

I'm assuming this was perpetrated by Islamic ISIS sympathizers, and probably related to the event in Quebec.

I'm not sure I can think of proper punishment for traitors of the state.

What would the USSR have done?

Our relations with the Muslim community are so good. I hope it's not ISIS and I hope there's no anti-Muslim social backlash. I hope Canada does respond as beautifully as Norway did.

That poor soldier, though. Fuck. I hope he's O.K.

How are there all these separate shootings and it doesn't seem like anyone else has been shot?

All of uOttawa is under lockdown too, as are basically all buildings within a click of the Hill.

These are scary times, but if we turn in on ourselves with draconian measures, barbed-wire fences and heavy mistrust, then we've let terror win and we can't let that happen. Going forward, we should look to Norway as an example of how we can combat terror with openness and freedom and show the world and these extremists that Canada is strong.

Me thinks this is unlikely.

If there was an actual concerted effort by these people, they'd be more effective than one death.

Let's not go that way, it's a free country with due process.

However, I fully expect the powers that be will overreact and we'll move one step closer to the security state to the south.

I'm sure we will also stupidly get more involved with the quagmire in the ME, which will only invite further reprisals.

A very sad day for Canada, because I have zero confidence that our current leadership will make the right moves.
