Amazing photos! Thanks for sharing, Chef.

I have always felt rather attraction about those northernmost cities like Duluth or International Falls. I´ve liked all your pics of Lake Superior.

Duluth looks nice, and Superior too. These days, it must be a very good moment in the year to visit both cities. Spending a winter there must be an unforgettable experience.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Love the grafitti. Thunder Bay (on Canada's side of Lake Superior) has the slogan "Superior by Nature". Works here too.

Great tour of the Twin Ports!

Have they started construction on the new office building in downtown Duluth yet? It was to be built for a women's retail clothing chain.

Maurice's yes...I am surprised the crane wasn't it one of the pics. They are building an 11 story office building and it is well underway.

PS, I love Duluth...but Superior is one of the most depressing places I have ever been. At least downtown has been spruced up a bit lately.

very interesting to see. you always wonder what its like around places like duluth. looks good. i would have expected a few more skyways of various ages and types between the buildings given the weather.

Superior has really weird vibe, it is like somebody gave David Lynch his own town. I have heard that it is where people in Duluth go to party. At least half of the businesses downtown seem to be dive bars.

Nice pictures!!
Duluth looks like a charming little city, but I can almost feel the wind off Superior in the winter. Between that and those hills, driving must be a tad tricky at times.

I absolutely love lake towns such as this one.

Their unofficial slogan is better: "Duluth is a Cool City".

Aside from being cold in the winter, they are also known as "the air-conditioned city" because their location on the lake keeps them rather cool in the summer. Thunder Bay is the same. There is probably a 10 to 20 degree difference (5 to 10 Celsius) between the waterfront and the edge of down. In Thunder Bay it never goes above 80 on the waterfront, I'd imagine the same for Duluth, if not colder. They've also been described as "the San Francisco of the north", so they're literally and figuratively cooler than everywhere else.

Wisconsin sucks.

Actually, occasionally it is reverse in Duluth (even aside from winter when it's often warmer by the lake because of the water)...if they get a nice west wind coming down the hillside it is actually enough of an elevation change to create compressional warming. I have been up there where it was actually 100 downtown up the shore to Two Harbors, and only mid 80s over the hill. That was extreme...but I have seen many compressional warming scenarios up there. Very interesting micro climates created by the terrain for a weather nerd like myself

If you google Duluth compressional heating you can find some examples. Interesting stuff.

We don't get that up here, our hill isn't too big. The climate in the city is definitely more moderate than the outlying areas though.

Awesome shots! I'm a Duluthian myself, and I would love to post some of my pictures here, but they're too large, unfortunately.

Here are my albums though.

Duluth: giants of downtown.

Duluth II: details of downtown, Carnegie Library, Old Central, and Canal Park.

Duluth III: Medical Arts Building "observation deck", Maurices building construction (which continues through following albums), Civic Center, Old Downtown/Lake Place, and Bayfront Park.

Duluth IV: Enger Peak (with panoramas!), Central Hillside, Old Downtown, and facades/atriums.

Duluth Misc: pictures that either did not fit in other albums or were taken on days that were not photo sessions. Includes Medical Arts "observation deck", moored ships, shoreline, night scenes, and recent images, the most recent taken yesterday.

Maurices Construction: detailed accounts of McGough's construction of Maurices' new 11 story headquarters building.
