When will there be more info on the "Alatus Groups's" proposal for the 42-story tower? Nothing over at SSC either.

^Probably not much until they close on the property later this year. I don't think they are planning on breaking ground until next spring.

I spent the summer in Winnipeg, and on the way back this past week I took the time to spend two days in Minneapolis to get a feel for the area. I have to say I went away feeling like I was in one of America's better places, so I enjoyed my visit.

One thing I didn't like is that the new LRT system felt fairly slow. I rode the entire system from Mall of America to St Paul twice and it took nearly an hour to get to St Paul from Minneapolis. Don't get me wrong, I love that its there, love when transportation is expanded, but it seems like a train with right of way would have been a bit better. Or maybe a dual system: BRT in the street, a rapid transit system (LRT, commuter rail, subway) in its own ROW for faster transport around University. I know in-street LRT is the fad of the moment these days, but when its done in the middle of a street with stoplights and auto traffic concerns it makes it intensely slower than it otherwise could be.

I noticed the capitol building was under reconstruction, looks like it'll be a great looking building when they're done. Anyway, just was impressed with the area. It was refreshing not running into bad neighborhoods all over the place. Minneapolis is certainly a top rate area.

/just off my long trip, excited not to be driving

Thanks, Dr! Yes, the Green Line between the two downtowns is slow, especially when the train moves into St. Paul. They are re-working the signal timing which should improve the speed a little bit.

On another note, here's a picture by Matt B for those who like a little construction porn. 10 tower cranes in 4 blocks of downtown Minneapolis, for the Wells Fargo complex and the Viking's Stadium. The blocks and buildings on the right will be razed for the new park:

Lots of things happening, so I'll post some updates soon. In the meantime...

Matt B (Bapster) shared a photo update of Latitude 45 Apartments on Washington in downtown Minneapolis. A couple more floors to go:

Nick Magrino over at UrbanMSP posted this update of the renovation of Gaviidae Common into the new HQ of Centerpoint Energy and street-level retail. It's at 5th & Nicollet Mall:

The Sayles-Belton bridge has been re-painted and re-lit with brighter LED's. The bridge is a Frank Lloyd Wright design from an unbuilt plan:

Just so people aren't confused. There was a bunch of stuff that wasn't supposed to be released yesterday and all got deleted.

^ yeah, apparently we weren't supposed to see those, but the thing was so gaudy and tacky that it's forever burned into my brain.

let's hope it stays hidden forever. i'd love to see a new landmark tower in minneapolis, but that dubai-esque garbage is not the way forward. minneapolis has way too much class for that.

Their money will be invested more locally now. I had more clients from the Minneapolis-St. Paul region investing in real estate partnerships than from any other area of the country. They don't call that metropolitan area 'Moneyapolis' for nothing.
The amount of wealth in Minneapolis is not such a big secret. I was shopping in Greece, one time, back in the 70's, I was asked where I was from, and I was shocked when the salesman said: I know of Minneapolis! Lots of money there!

I meet so many outsiders who are shocked at the number of Fortune 500 companies there, thinking: Why Minneapolis! Capital of American Siberia!!!

Well, as you well know, the executives, and their wives, just like in NYC, skedaddle out of there during winter! 2nd homes, 3rd homes, somewhere else! And the workers stay there and suffer! And, most of them are forever traveling on business!

^ Imby: Sorry, I don't believe that for a minute! Like I said over at SSC earlier... one by one, block by block we keep getting undersized, underwhelming Shit by Cheap Uninspired local developers who are nothing more than Suburban developers!! Don't hold your breath if you think Minneapolis will have a bigger skyline than Dallas or Atlanta.... It's just never going to happen! Sorry, but I'd bet money on it!

Latitude 45 has topped out. Photo by Bapster. The owner of Bar La Grassa and Barrio has signed a lease for a new restaurant here.

In other miscellaneous news, the Ceresota Mill is in the process of being converted to apartments. It used to be offices. The building features a giant skylight and a 5-story-high mirrored wall that bounces light around the timber-framed interior.

And the long-dormant Grain Belt Beer sign looks like it will shine again.
