My balcony at my residence in Winnipeg looks east towards the Heritage landing. When I moved to Edmonton at the end of the summer, I think the top floor was barely peaking above the tree line. I came home for a visit this weekend and was surprised to see that there is about 6 stories + above the trees now! Thats decent progress since I have only been gone for 6 weeks!

Shows what a difference three floors make (the amount added while you were gone)! Now imagine 10 more...

The tower crane was heightened by several stories today.

I've seen cast in place go up at about the same rate so I don't think the incentive is speed so much as lower cost and less weather dependence.

As for your comment about less workers needed, I'm not sure why you'd be concerned. If less workers are required, the structure will cost less, allowing the buyers to have more money left over for other things, which creates jobs elsewhere. When you save on labour, the total number of jobs in the entire economy ends up being the same, you just have more stuff. You'll note that long-term unemployment has been in the same range for a century despite huge leaps in labour saving technology. It's nothing to worry about.

P.S. Think about it from the worker's perspective too- do you really want to be doing an unnecessary job that could easily be streamlined, just for the sake of having a job? Most people I know in jobs like that have pretty low morale. Much better to eliminate those jobs in favor of truly meaningful work that needs to be done and affords workers a sense of dignity and pride.

Does anyone know what they are building on the river? There are large steel beams dug in directly under the river walkway which is now built-up a couple feet higher than the rest of the walkway, the beams are pointing out over the river. Some kind of platform? Or is it even related to this project?

There's a walkway that comes down from Assiniboine Ave to the river walkway there. Maybe some upgrades as part of the development?

Maybe the Navy is upgrading (or repairing) their dock.

I though the Navy got rid of their dock long time ago? (I was in Navy reserve back in early 90's)

Still there on Google maps. Not a dock, more of a quay really.

inlp89....Can you point out the location of the said protrusion? lol..

If it's between the Midtown bridge and below the Townhouses at 300, It could be the location of a Sewer outfall. (high water levels combined with the projects waste water would release more sewage into the Ass.).

It was a a requirement to upgrade the sewer system if Waste & Water deemed it necessary.

Then again it could be a water slide/toboggan run as well.

It could be the upgrade I was speaking of but I can't give you a definitive yes. Need an engineer in here ASAP.
