Some pics from where "the yellow cranes" come from...
The pictures were taken in Biberach (Riss) on April 20 this year.

A crane operator makes $43.55 / hour here in Chicago.

It costs the company he / she is working for $86 / hour. That's the $43.55 in hourly wage to the employee, plus $21.86 in fringes (FICA, FUTA,...), and also 29.82% paid into a workmen's compensation fund.

Almost forgot, it all goes up a few dollars on June 1st, for annual union wage increases.

Thank you for the source photos johannes867

Kayo that is the type of detail that makes this forum worth it, I wonder how many hours an operator can average per year, do they get paid if they show up and the site is closed due to weather ?

mdiederi - real professional grade photo there

Yep. Quite a common practice when the crane is outside the tower, we've seen them do that on both the arriVa and Vetro condo towers in Calgary in the past year. Theres a few others that will undergo that as well once their respective projects are completed, though I have seen at least one that was outside be disassembled at its full height (though only about 12 stories in the air)

I'd assume they go that route versus disassembling it while its at its maximum height for safety reasons, along with the fact they wouldn't need as large a mobile crane do to the disassembly.

Jumping

Note the man at the right with the hook to grab the frame

This piece is secured to the transfer railings.

Then the crane lifts the counterweght (I posted a pic of the whole perspective- post 662)

Then the boring part...It took about 15 minutes or so of hydraulic lifting as seen in the next few frames

Then when above the mast top the new piece is slid into place in about 10 seconds (I missed it the first time, and had to sit thru another cycle to catch it )

After which the frame pins? are pounded in with a sledge, but due to sunset the shutter needed more time, hence the blur. You can get the idea.

Then the counterweight is lowered and the process repeated.

((BVic caught some of this process from below with excellent lighting and perspective in post 582.))

I'm not sure where you're buying the Work Comp insurance from, but 29.82% is very high for crane operators...

I counted 23 tower cranes working in Vegas on the Strip while on vacation two weeks ago. Unbelievable. They've got them set up tip-to-tip out there. Either incredibly efficient, or incredibly dangerous...one or the other!

We've got a number of projects in Calgary with multiple, the most crowded is the Centennial Place project which has 5 cranes on a city block measuring about 400 feet by 300 feet. Overall we're in the low 70's now in terms of cranes in the air, though a dozen projects have multiple cranes on them.

Although not full scale, some might enjoy this tower crane build link:

The crane at Waterview

Since there aren't enough photos of cranes here.....

Does anyone know the technical name for the little crane used in the end here ?

111 W Wacker, Chicago, Ill. Waterview.

A story of two red cranes

Oct 4 2006 - Initially fixed, sizing the base in the bottom pad.

Nov 14 2006 - Tower up.

July 31 2007

Sept 20 1007

Feb 25 2008

The big crane was stuck at the top of the building when funding ran out.
