'Dookie' looks pretty miserable in this photograph.

I usually don't like to comment negatively on a person's appearance but the guy next to him with the bags under his eyes looks a bit nefarious as well.

The man to the left of Louella could very well be a silent film star (he looks vaguely familiar) but I haven't been able to identify him.

The lady in the lower right corner is the picture of health and beauty.

Did anyone else notice the ridiculously tall candles?

Mr. Ordaz doesn't have a location but several comment have said it looks like Lo Angeles in the 1950s) -I agree.

I believe this was taken at a wedding and the little boy with his eyes closed is obviously the ring-bearer.....and hating every minute of it. lol

I believe if the photographer turned around there might be a church.

On Set Hollywoof

The above photo is a screen shot from the new film Rules Don't Apply, which opened yesterday. It shows a car driving west down Hollywood Blvd. in 1958. (The movie takes place roughly from 1958 - 1964.) The car in the photo is in the film quite a lot. We can see a few locations spotlighted on NLA before. What kind of special effect do you think this is? Inserted car into actual footage, or recreated in a computer or what? I can't really tell myself.

There are some scenes shot on location at various places in Hollywood, including:

If you were reading this thread yesterday, the subject of today's Julius Shulman post won't be a surprise. It's "Job 2622: Case Study House No. 21 (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1958, 1959". There are 31 images in the set - 26 black & white and 5 color. I've had to take some tough decisions about which ones to leave out, but I've got it down to 12 images to give a flavor of what's available. You can always click the link at the bottom to see the rest. The address wasn't mentioned yesterday - it's 9038 Wonderland Park. Here's how it started out.



Still no floor, but the roof's coming along.



We then jump to the finished house.



The shallow pools go around most of the house.



From this side it looks more like shipping containers than a $4.5 million house .



The patio is on the south side.



I've avoided the views of the entrance which we saw yesterday. Here's a wider shot.



The kitchen is behind the wall on the left of the picture above.



I'd feel rather exposed in the bedroom!



Now the color shots.



The kitchen was cream with blue seats on the chairs.



I'll finish with this photo. Like the bedroom, it doesn't look like there was much privacy in the bathroom.

Oh, Good Lord, that house had one of those GE wall-hung refrigerators:



We had one in our house in Minneapolis. No capacity, conked out all the time. No way to replace it without redoing the whole kitchen (which we eventually did.)

First time it died my wife said to the repairman "I bet you don't see one of these very often." He replied, "Lady, the Betty Crocker kitchen has 22 of them. I see them all the time."

The kids hated it because they had to drag a step stool into the kitchen to get milk. The cats, however, loved it: a heated shelf to lay on during the winter.

But . . . but . . . here at Schloss Odinthor, we had one from the time the place was built (1958) until it finally wore out thirty years later, and were delighted with it. We had to re-do the cabinetry to accommodate its replacement, a Sub-Zero, which was (and is) vertical rather than horizontal. Same depth, though.

OMG, the infamous Brew 102 and it's Hollywood Freeway home! The one thing I remember about that god-forsaken sludge was that my grandmother bought it by the case from Sav-on. As a child, she lost her hair to some early 1900's disease and always wore a wig. The more Brew 102 she pounded down, the more crooked the wig got!

I understand that there are about 2500 labels of beer sold in the US and 32,000 sold worldwide. From what I have been told, Brew 102 was the worst beer ever made.

Brew 102...1951 to 1972.....may it Rest in Peace...no more causing brain damage. Paul K., the owner of the brewery where the 102 juice was made gave many millions to hospitals upon his death in 1987.

Paul Kalmanovitz (1905–1987) He was mostly hated by his employees. His game was to buy a brewery, fire all the employees and sell the machinery.

We've seen a couple of Julius Shulman photosets of Gibraltar Savings branches before. This one is "Job 4104: Maxwell Starkman Associates, Gibraltar Savings (Fullerton, Calif.), 1966".



Here's a different angle on the corner.



Note the model of the building on the desk at the right. This is one of two virtually identical images of the interior.



The last shot shows a stairway and one of the stained glass windows.
