We have a bonanza of construction photos today!

This is from a different eBay seller so I don't believe it's the same building as in the previous post.

"City National Bank Construction Photo 1960s Los Angeles California Building"

eBay

Obviously the building is almost complete but it's fun to see the construction sign.

I notice that sign says "An underground walkway to Pershing Square Garage"!"

I'd imagine that tunnel is still there, no?

The sign also says "A New Los Angeles Landmark."
It doesn't have that connotation to me, but I suppose in the broadest terms possible it could be.

2233 Fern Dell Place. It was built in 1924 as 2238 E Live Oak Dr--that street is up the hill--I didn't dig into when the address changed, but it seems to be after Wade died in 1939. Charles H Wade was the prexy of the State Building and Loan Association. The barn is actually the east end of 2251 Fern Dell Pl--which seems to have started out in the fall of 1926 addressed 2250 Live Oak....

Seems there has been no GSV car along Fern Dell Pl....

Wilshire Bl. is the focus, isn't that the Temple, and the IBM building near the construction ? The Ambassador would be too low to be seen. Just a guess.

Thanks unihikid.

Here's my 2 cents.

I think the building circled is the old Union Oil Headquarters built in. .um. .1955(?).

It has the same slight V shape. (see below)

usc digital archive 1955

Excellent sleuthing on the Wade residence, GaylordWilshire.

And thanks for the information on the City National Bank Building, Martin Pal...I've never heard about the tunnel connecting it to the parking lot under Pershing Square but it makes sense.
If any of you norishers live or work downtown perhaps you can scope it out for us & take some photos.

This is interesting. I don't believe we have seen the Aragon Avenue School on NLA.

Currently on eBay

Let's take a closer look.

I wonder if that's the school up on the hill on the right. - - - - >

No, that not the school. That’s my childhood home. The school is to the left of the school children. The school building at that time would be very different from the building that currently sits on the site.

Yep, that's right where they were when they had their picture taken over a hundred years ago!

Definitely NOT the Union Oil Building. Look at the horizontal spandrels that are not on the Union Oil. If the Union Oil there should be the 405 and buildings in front of it.

I've seen this building before. Cannot put my finger on it. The building under construction is in reality two buildings, one partially in front of the other. Those might be spires on top or two tower cranes.

My guess is that is a southwesterly view towards Wilshire Boulevard, and the high-rise under construction is The Equitable Building on Wilshire: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0617...8192?entry=ttu

I don't know what the building circled is, though.

Hmm, could it be the Ambassador Tower, on 7th and Irolo? https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0605...8192?entry=ttu

Until encountering this sign I had no idea the city was doing this.....

The sign, at W. 4th St. and S. Kingsley Dr., memorializes the murder of Ofcr. Thomas Scebbi in the early morning hours of June 20, 1958.

The story is that Ofcr. Scebbi and his partner, Ramon Espinoza, were working that night in their prowl car out of Wilshire Division....sometime after midnight they received a be-on-the-lookout call for a man who had robbed a liquor store in the area....they proceeded to canvass the streets and eventually turned up S. Kingsley Dr.

At 2:30 AM they saw a man walking alone past 322 S. Kingsley, improbably he was wearing white gloves....the officers stopped him and approached....turns out the man, James Hooten, was an ex-con casing the neighborhood for a house to burglarize....he was packing a .22 caliber handgun, stolen the day before, under his shirt....the gloves were to protect against fingerprints.

Hooten thought he could BS his way out of the scrape, but as one of the officers indicated a pat-down he panicked: "I thought I could bluff them out of searching me," he said later. "I gave one cop my ID. The other guy looked like he was going to frisk me. Something inside me snapped. All I know is if they found that stolen gun, I'd be back in stir. I didn't want to go back."

He pulled the gun and opened fire, striking both officers, who returned fire and hit Hooten in the left leg....Scebbi crawled back into the car and called in the shooting before he collapsed....he was pronounced dead at the scene....

Backup arrived.....

Ofcr. Espinoza was critically wounded and taken to Central Receiving Hospital, where he eventually recovered....Hooten was found on a nearby lawn and was transported to a hospital prison ward....

"Suspect screams in pain as Nurse Wini Gronvold cleans left leg shattered by police bullet. Detective Sgt. Eugene Danforth stands by to question Hooten as soon as he can talk after treatment".

After recovering from his wounds Hooten was promptly convicted, and executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin on May 13, 1960 (11 days after the execution of Caryl Chessman in the same room).....

Thomas Scebbi, left, and Ramon Espinoza....

Additional details here.....http://www.cemeteryguide.com/LAPD-Scebbi.html

Buildings to the right of the construction appear to be the Tishman complex at 3440 Wilshire.

It was that Tishman complex that gave me the clue; I know that area from my childhood. St. Basil's Catholic Church is near there, I'd go to Mass with my family there when I was very young.

Maybe because the camera was tilted, it looks like we're facing southwest, when it's actually looking southeast across Wilshire. I spent a lot of time searching for Italianate churches, and finally worked out that the one lower-right of center was the chapel at the entrance to Hollywood Forever cemetery.

The photographer was probably in the tower at 6255 Sunset Blvd, and the circled building is 3345 Wilshire Blvd.

One more from a hundred years ago. Aragon elementary from Roseview Ave. Near San Fernando Rd.

I found this picture of a midget racer at the TESS LAPL digital photo collection.

I can’t seem to figure out how to post the picture. Any suggestions?

That is not it either. The photo is taken from a raised vantage point. I see a number of perfectly white buildings in the foreground suggestive of a campus or studio. I looked everywhere south of the hills and...nothing.
