Was this a picture of the Biltmore's interior...does it go with the exterior?

Thanks for the follow-up, GW. I appreciate it.

If I remember correctly, per a later discussion, the model is in the lobby of the Mason Theater at 127 S. Broadway. (formerly the Mason Opera House)

Here's a look inside. ....It seems to match up.

I'm impressed by this fountain. . . but I can't figure out the light above her head. ...Is it attached to the top of her head? ...

See those four urns......................................................................................................................................................

Here's one up close....Instant death if you find yourself standing below one during an earthquake.

1949 - "Up on the balcony level breezeway with a policeman inspecting one of the giant vases after someone had tried to push one into the street."

hmmm. . .I had always heard that most of the precarious architectural ornament, like this mega-urn, were removed from buildings in Los Angeles after the 1933 Earthquake. ....I was misinformed.

If the locations for that photograph is correct, I'm guessing that the urns were replaced at some point in the building's life. The facade view shows (to me), a wider opening on the urn top and either curved handles or decorative embellishment (snakes?) on the sides of the necks of the urns. The Urn the policeman is next to has a much slimmer, simpler neck and top.

Perhaps the urns were damaged in the 1932 quake, or were replaced with sturdier versions, and the style was modified to a cleaner profile as shown here?

Arch2000, you might be right about snake-like handles.

DETAIL

But to me the rest of the urn looks identical to the 1949 urn.

Here's the whole photograph.

The famous (still famous) song that came from this show is apropos for our times...well, any times.

I am hoping someone can dig up some information on a 'Triumph of Peace' pagent held in Pacific Palisades.

I'll post it LARGE so y'all can see the banner.

found on eBay quite some time ago.

The name of the pageant makes me think the photograph was taken soon after the end of WWI.

There's a structure off the side of the road (under the large branch) and the remnant of a fence by the right front tire.

RE: The Biltmore Theater

I see that the urns, that we've been discussing, were removed prior to the 1964 demolishion.

LAPL

I imagine they found homes in someone's backyard in. . .say. . .Beverly Hills.

I believe if we looked long and hard, and pooled our resources, we could track at least one of them down. ...*jumps in the googlemobile and takes off*

note the marquee:....Now Playing.... Cleveland Wrecking Company.... .Show with a Bang

P.S. I just noticed the open areas within the tall arches have been filled in.

I suspect Benzedrine, still over the counter in 1949.

I suspect Napoleon Complex.......... Don't get angry (again) with me CBD. Remember, I'm only 5' 6".

I'm trying to understand the trail left by his left foot. Did he have a club foot?

The "club foot" and its path is curious...but the cop appears to be holding Donald's flannel shirt so he can flex for the camera. V v odd. And the kid seems to have been way ahead of his time in terms of fashion, what with the prison-style droopy drawers and all.

Good summary. When I entered college in 1957, the student health service was passing them out like candy. I contracted mononucleosis in 1958 and that's what they gave me. I got home and went to my regular doc at Kaiser (then one of the most advanced health services in country) and he totally freaked out. Between the mono and bennie withdrawal I pretty much slept through the whole summer of 1958.

Cheers,

Earl

I agree...he was high on Bennies, a form of amphetamine. Often it was combined with alcohol.

No, I don't suspect Napoleon Complex.....he was high as a kite, as they used to say. Even that cop, Officer John Buffington had a slight smile on his face.

Benzedrine was a common Pick-Me-Up drug in those days...often used by the Beat authors such as Jack Kerouac. With those pills he could type for 24 hours on his old typewriter and produced such books as "On The Road" and others. I read that book and you can tell he's stoned.

Here a little tune from that era......

tenor

The movie directors at MGM thought that the little white pills would give Judy more pep for day and night filming of the Oz classic.
