I didn't actually get to see the downtown and its beauty until I visited under my "own power", and actually stopped by.. and that was a surprise. My opinion of the city shot up probably around 10x. Rothesay has really improved itself recently, too, though its still quite suburban. I'm amazed there isn't more demand for people to live in the downtown, the architecture is so great, especially when compared to the rest of the city which is so industrial. Its by far the prettiest part of the city, despite it being quite run down.
It's a shame really. The city isn't particularly postcard friendly, being industrial with a small mediocre skyline & none of the nice architecture on display. The economy may be shit but I like the way the place feels lost in time when walking around uptown & looking at all the old gritty buildings rarely interrupted by anything modern. It's probably one of the most underappreciated cities in the country. Most people I mention it to just assume I'm talking about Newfoundland.

Couple more pics from my visit:

A few from the other side of the country in Victoria. The next five from Bas 1953 on Flickr

Lower Johnson Street, lots of great local stores

Eclectic general store, until recently the basement was like a museum full of old shipping and diving relics as it was originally a marine salvage company.

Formerly a church, the Alix Goolden Hall seats 800 for concerts. I saw Tokyo Police Club there on the last tour - great venue.

Church of our Lord - in pretty good shape for a wooden church built in 1876.

That last photo is startling. Like seeing something forty years or more out of time.

This is precisely why I love Montreal. The backstreets, the vegetable gardens, the clotheslines, massive amounts of people eating in their backyards and in the ruelles as soon as the weather's beautiful. It's like a huge village of villages.
