You could argue that the Nordstrom or even the Freedom Tower would "detract" some views of the ESB. It's all a matter of perspective, which is why that argument has no merit.

But you have nothing to worry about for now...

@NYguy, I meant because of it's proximity to the the ESB and it's bulk, although i would still love to see it rise.

And does anyone know about some extra info regarding Michael Schvo's tower? (news articles, DOB filings, etc...)

Again, a matter of perspective.

For dominance, yeah it would challenge the ESB, as will others.

Not even from Jersey. It could be standing right next door, and both would be visible from Jersey.

I'm hoping they rule it to not contribute to the height, maybe it will cause so much outrage that they'll either be forced to change how they categorize skyscraper height or Durst just ends up cladding the thing and shutting everyone up.

I'm probably dreaming though.

I hope so too. Maybe the CTBUH will tell Durst / PA that removing the radome was a bad move. One can dream right?

Durst might not even give a crap. I'm sorry, but things like this don't usually go as planned.

Donald Trump, once very interested in supertall development in Manhattan, on why he no longer builds in New York...

http://nypost.com/2013/11/12/mayor-b...te-to-do-list/

Quote:
It’s very important for a new mayor to understand this is no longer just a local market. Developers operate worldwide. If New York’s developers aren’t treated properly, we won’t be in New York. It’s no longer a hard trip to other countries such as China. I’m a prime example. I’m doing jobs all over the world and not so much in Manhattan.
See, it's all about travel...

Don't worry Donald. Too many people are picking up where you left off - and are succeeding where you could not.

Trump hasn't built a building in many, many years. He licenses his name to developments.

The Chicago building was a financial disaster for Trump, BTW. He's lucky to have survived that.

Hopefully Shvo Tower will get going soon, and surpass both 1 WTC and 225 W. 57, so we won't have these height arguments.

I really think a 500m+ tower is on the horizon.

Right now New York will be the King of towers in the 400m range:

1. 217W57th: 434m (or 472m max.)
2. 432 PA: 426m
3. 1WTC: 417m (541m)
4. 111W57th: 412m
5. 2WTC: 411m
6. HY North: 408m
7. 1 Vanderbilt: 406m (400m min.)
8. Shvo Tower: 400m+
(ESB: 449m)

Sooner or later someone will propose something really big, which will dwarf the rest. It's simply evolution.

Crazy times in NYC right now ! I'm on the same page as you. Let's see what this Schvo guy can do !

Not that it's relevant, here's a list I made of all the completed/topped-out supertalls currently in the US:

New York City:
- One World Trade Center (541m)
- Empire State Building (381m)
- Bank of America Tower (366m)
- Chrysler Building (319m)
- New York Times Building (319m)
- One57 (306m)

Chicago:
- Willis Tower (442m)
- Trump International Hotel and Tower (423m)
- Aon Center (346m)
- John Hancock Center (344m)
- Franklin Center (307m)
- Two Prudential Plaza (303m)

Atlanta:
- Bank of America Plaza (312m)

Los Angeles:
- U.S. Bank Tower (310m)

Houston:
- JPMorgan Chase Tower (305m)
- Wells Fargo Plaza (302m)

Honorable Mention:
NYC: Four World Trade Center (297m)
Philly: Comcast Center (297m)

NYC is its own species!

^ Nice. New York jumped from 4 to 6. The city already got a massive height boost when 1WTC, 4WTC and One57 topped out. Next one is 432 PA, then 3WTC. After that it's open season! 111W57th, 217W57th, HY North, Tower Verre, 2WTC etc will rise pretty much simultaneously. 2020 is gonna be good.

I agree, and speaking from experience one should always remain a bit sceptical.

Let's see that the chances are of those 400m+ actually getting built:

1. 217W57th: 434m (or 472m max.)
Tower is as of right and has financing (although not 100%). Excavation is on the way and foundation work should be completed by next year. So this is a go.

2. 432 PA: 426m
Already under construction. Will top out by next year.

3. 1WTC: 417m (541m)
Already topped out and soon to be completed.

4. 111W57th: 412m
Same as 217W, it's as of right. Financing is in process and shouldn't be a great deal. Tower should start by mid 2014.

5. 2WTC: 411m
Currently on hold. To continue construction 2WTC needs a tenant. It's likely that by 2014 it will still be on hold. So my guess is 2015. At least the foundations are already done and the base is above street level.

6. HY North
: 408m
Approved and already has a big tenant (Time Warner) so that construction can begin immediately. Unfortunately it will take some time (my guess is the whole next year) to build the needed platform over the railtracks. Related said the tower will start construction next year.

7. 1 Vanderbilt: 406m (400m min.)
Since the Midtown East rezoning got delayed by at least a year, we won't see any major news till 2015. There are a lot of factors in play here.

8. Shvo Tower: 400m+
Our mystery tower which should have 100 storys. Not much is known except that Mr. Shvo is apparently back in business.

(9. ESB: 449m) Completed.

Good news!!

We got two height increases!!

- 50 West Street from 714ft to 783ft! This will make quite an impact given the location. Also the tower is already under construction.

- The Corset aka Hudson Yards D Tower: from 844ft to 870ft!
