Within a 100 mile radius. That's not the MSA population figure.

I think Memphis and New Orleans swap number 1 and 2 on a bi-annual basis. At least they should.

Despite everything, the largest cities in the southeast in regards to true metropolitan feel and international relations, ie. business, etc. are as follows:

1. Atlanta
2. Miama
3. Charlotte
4. Memphis
5. New Orleans
6. Raleign
7. Tampa
8. Nashville
9. Orlando
10. Louisville and Birmingham (if Louisville is considered southeast)

I base this on demographic studies from my international corporation in seeking relocation of European businesses.

This thread is hilarious with all these "scientific" formulas.

Thread should have been named what's your list of the largest cities in the Southeast.

When will this thread die? I'm quite surprised/glad that it hasn't resulted in war-like arguments, but most of these rankings are totally subjective and therefore are even more pointless than a Forbes list...

I like how this guy went 14 deep so Greenville wasn't at the end of the list.

This ranking is pretty off, whether going by metro or city population.

I totally agree, KB0679. I HATE these kinds of rankings, but let me take a stab at it.

Atlanta
Miami
Charlotte
Nashville
Orlando
Tampa
Raleigh
Jacksonville
New Orleans
Birmingham
Memphis
Greenville
Charleston
Colombia

I used a combination of metro size, economy, flight connectivity, industry, growth or lack of, future outlooks, and perception. Not an easy thing to do, obviously.

Thoughts?

I actually had a list and explanation, but I don't feel like going through the pain of explaining it all to people who refuse to listen to anyone's reason. So... I'm still gonna stay out of all this.

That's probably because I used CSA population.

Actually, I didn't do it so Greenville wouldn't be at the end, I just stopped at Charleston.

Can't say that I blame you! I sort of wish I had never posted what I did, but on a Saturday night with a couple of drinks involved I thought I would take a stab at it.

Anything below the top 6 are tough, no matter which approach you take. Hell, anything below the top 2 are!

And to add even more confusion, I think Huntsville & the Triad should be included...

Haha, it's OK atlantaguy... The fact is, the Southeast is in such a state of flux that it is truly impossible to establish any kind of hierarchy for its cities. Just off the top of my head, I can imagine around 4 tiers just considering the metros above 1 million.

Where does Birmingham go? Where does Jacksonville go? Where does Charlotte go?

Where in the heck are Richmond and Norfolk on that list? Or Louisville? DC, if you want to count it?

Plus any list is going to be arbitrary to what population figures you use. Do you count city, county, MSA, CSA? Each one will yield different results. Take an average of all those, rank GDP, rank skyline height, number of pro sports teams, and add everything up and you still have a list that is lacking.

Interesting lists over population statistics. I wonder how such a list would like like using economic statistics (GMP) ?

4) Washington-Arlington-Alexandria: $434 billion
5) Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown: $420 billion
6) Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington: $401 billion
$400 BILLION
10) Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta: $284 billion
11) Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano: $260 billion
$200 BILLION
19) Baltimore Metropolitan Area: $144 billion
22) Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area: $115,752
23) Tampa Bay Area: $114 billion
24) Charlotte Metropolitan Area : $113 billion
29) Greater Orlando: $104 billion
30) Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky: $100 billion
$100 BILLION
35) Greater Austin: $86 billion
38) Greater San Antonio: $82 billion
39) Nashville Metropolitan Area: $81 billion
40) Hampton Roads: $80 billion
41) New Orleans Metropolitan Area: $71 billion
44) Memphis Metropolitan Area: $65 billion
45) Greater Richmond Region: $64 billion
46) Greater Jacksonville: $60 billion
47) Louisville Metropolitan Area: $58 billion
48) Oklahoma City Metro: $58 billion
49) Research Triangle: $57 billion
50) Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Area: $53 billion

I included a few border cities, but all are south of or on the Ohio or Arkansas Rivers, or south of the old Mason-Dixon Line.

response to #110- as the original poster asked for a hard number, then it would have been statistically (should) based on sound figures. as no empirical formula appears to have been used w/ the last method, the derivative numbers yielded for the named cities would necessarily have to be taken as a constant error in the primary figures for the cities. ordinal yield vis a vie a nominal yield, etc.

the parameters given in proposal#110 would make for a more interesting sociological argument, as it would give both practical numbers, in addition to cause and effect.
