Like something out of a Hopper painting, a 1952 view of magnificent Richfield Oil Tower (built 1928), sadly torn down in 1969 to make way for ARCO twins:

A far sighted developer should build a new version (mixed use) of this tower (or something similar) somewhere in DTLA (on Pershing Square or Broadway?), but much taller--75-90 stories? An "Art Deco Revival" masterpiece, 950 feet tall plus a 300 foot spire on top--total height 1250', same as Empire State Building. The old height laws kept the building proper at 150 feet, although the decorative crown and "oil derrick"spire took the building to over 350'--second in height to City Hall. On clear nights the illuminated spire was visible for many miles. The crown and "airship mooring mast" spire of the Empire State Building (built in 1929-31) was said by some to have been inspired by the Richfield tower. Similar shape.
