A very chilly April 9. But at least it got up to freezing downtown, if only unofficially.

But a nice enough April 9 evening. ;-)

Tonight we went to Chinched (it means, basically, "happy and full" in Newfoundland English). It's not high end, but close enough for us.

SO GOOD...

Walking down George Street East. Chinched is the one with the big windows.

We sat upstairs...

And when you're done, you can work a pole at either of the strip clubs surrounding...

Or burn off your dinner walking up out of downtown...

Highly recommend this place.

We had 30 minutes of sun this morning. That was nice.

Drove out through Flatrock and Pouch Cove to see how the snow cover was doing. Mostly gone, except in the woods.

Went to Mount Carmel Cemetery, one of the oldest Catholic burial grounds in the city, for a few shots of the backside of downtown on my way back into the city.

This is what the area behind the Basilica looks like. Most of it is part of Georgestown but to the right it becomes part of Churchill Park. There's a bit on the horizon that's probably in my neighbourhood, Rabbittown.

Now Spring is here. Normally our foggy season begins much earlier - but winter ran late this year.

We've been two days buried beneath the fog.

A little taste of what it's like...

I think so, yeah.

Average price here is something around $340,000 - but that's for a typical anywhere-in-North-America house in the suburbs. They go up to about $800,000 for the really nice rowhouses with bay windows, and as low as $400,000 for those depending on square footage and neighbourhood.

But mine - a little, flat-front rowhouse in a run-down neighbourhood... it was only $150,000.

One little oddity: until about 1970s, we were violently segregated between Catholics (majority spanning all social classes) and Protestant (upper class). You can get a VERY nice house in a traditionally Catholic area, even if it's completely Protestant today, for a little cheaper than in the former Protestant neighbourhoods, which still have residual prestige.

A couple of samples from right now on the local real estate agent site:

Very interesting. What about those houses on the rock facing the sea? and also is it true that if you go in rural newfoundland you can buy houses for less than 100K?

Oh, absolutely.

Houses facing the ocean in St. John's are expensive by our standards, but still cheap. If it looks like the $150,000 example above, but is located in the Battery (that cliffhanging neighbourhood), it'll be $300,000. If it's nice and out there, it'll be $1 million+.

Anything over $100,000 in rural areas would be a bit of an anomaly. You can get a fixer-upper rural house for a few thousand - but keep in mind that might mean outhouse, no indoor plumbing except a faucet in the kitchen/basement connected to a nearby spring for cold drinking water. However, if you want something move-in ready, it can still be dirt cheap.

Even if you need to be within an easy day's drive of a city, you can still get it pretty cheap in the middle of nowhere:

Thanks so much, guys.

A few from today...

The re-clad on Confederation Building (our equivalent of a State Capitol). It was built in the 1950s shortly after we joined Canada to replace our former Parliament, which is STILL TODAY in the process of being converted into a museum of our political history during our partial (1832-1855) and proper independence (1855-1933).

The view toward Cape Spear from Signal Hill. Cape Spear is just a bastardized name. It was original Cabo Esperanza, then became Cap d'Espoir (French for Cape of Hope). The English who conquered St. John's in 1583 and finally took over the island for good in 1713 just pronounced it poorly and it became Cape Spear over the years. The town of Baie d'Espoir here is pronounced the same way (Bay duh Spear). Always cracks me up that a town whose name meant Bay of Hope sounds like Bay Despair.

Nice pictures.

The picture of the Lieutenant Governor's house didn't show up. What does it look like? Incidentally, what does your former Prime Minister's residence, your former Parliament, and current Confederation Building look like?

Don't say the s-word in my presence, please. No, I don't miss it at all. I photographed around it but St. John's is third-world-level littered. We don't have that societal expectation that people not toss their garbage at their feet or out their car window yet.

So I genuiely do miss the illusion of cleanliness that winter provides... but the cold, the slop, the misery. No. Not a bit. I hate almost every moment of it.

My street a month or whatever ago:
