Nice inside views, after seeing about 5000 pics of the outside... And it answered the question about colored lighting.

The building itself won't be lit up, but above it the mast will have the rotating light from the beacon, and the mast will be capable of light shows, similar to what we now have with the Empire State and now the Parachute Drop at Coney Island. It could look something like this...
Thankfully the light show won't be quite as garish as that. Unlike the Coney Island ride, there are no LEDs imbedded in the length of the mast itself. Instead there are high-intensity LED spotlights, situated around the perimeter of each of the platforms which circle the height of the mast. These spotlights will shine upwards and (as it is known in the lighting biz) "Shine with a multi-coloured wash" on each section. The colours will have the ability to shift sequentially, in unison or randomly at various speeds, as well as just stay steady at one hue.

We have already seen a test of these colours when the upper most portion of the mast was still on the ground beside the tower. *Note the LED spotlights on the bottom ring of the first picture.

Yea... imagine being the sorry suckers who had to put colored baggies on 80 floors of lightbulbs, yikes. Time well spent?

The beacon is on! I don't know if it's a permanent thing or if they're just testing it, but it is definitely on right now. It rotates very slowly, with a period of about 20 seconds.

No, there are not. That's whey I said it could be something like it.

The spire at 1 World Trade Center will serve as a television and radio antenna, and it will feature an LED-powered light that will be visible from tens of miles away, said Scott Rechler, the vice chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the lower Manhattan trade center site. The light, which will change colors, is to be activated in the next few months.

"It will be a beacon of hope, just like the Statue of Liberty," Rechler said.

Inside the shiny skin, workers are wiring up hundreds of individual LED lights, whose beams will comprise an architectural beacon flooding the tri-state area via a spinning mirror. An FAA beacon will also wink on the top.

A short lightning rod will top off the tower at 1,795.4 feet above the north lobby, and all will be lit at night by a colorful array of LED lights.

Later this year, LEDs from Barbizon Lighting will illuminate the spire of the new One World Trade Center building in New York City.

Some time later this year, the spire will be illuminated by RGB LED lights, and from its top a rotating, 300,000-lumen, white LED-powered beacon will shine.

The outfit overseeing this showcase LED project is Barbizon Lighting Company in New York. It is in the business of designing LED lighting systems for theatrical, film and television, architectural, and other uses.

There has been controversy going back almost a year as to whether the spire should be considered part of the building, for purposes of calculating its height, or merely an antenna (which, functionally, it will be). The design originally called for enclosing the steel skeleton of the spire in a white fiberglass shell. The builder argued successfully before the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to omit the shell, thereby saving $20 million, on the grounds that it would be impossible to maintain. (The building's architects demur, claiming that the issue was settled successfully in the design phase.)

The omission of the shell presented design issues for Barbizon. Lighting a steel skelton is not the same as lighting white fiberglass. As Gebbie explained in an email:

In order to bathe the entire antenna structure in color changing light, Barbizon and Strong utilized some of the brightest LED outdoor fixtures in the industry to achieve the over 100' throw distance from the roof to the first set of fixtures located on the antenna itself. The remainder of the [spire will be] lit from 6 platforms attached to the antenna.

So now, everyone is up to date on that.

The Beacon is lit.... and ROTATING!

I'm in my office on the 40th floor of the ESB... looking at the thunderstorms behind it.... the beam of light is still too faint, but I"m sure it will be much brighter after the sun sets.

Pretty amazing still.... reminds me of something out of the 1920's... or maybe a gigantic lighthouse.

Is this just a test of the beacon or is it going to be on every night from now on?

the person who posted the photo earlier said the beacon was on at 75% so it's only a test, but ironmike said the beacon should be ready for the 4th

Amazing; it's going to be the main architectural feature of the entire building and you can just see other towers will emulate it (no doubt making a point of being at a higher elevation).

A brief knowledge on what's on the inside!

Excellent post, most interesting pics here in weeks. We need more interior shots, and more of the stonework inside the base and also the base glass now that they have turned most of the fins out.

Does anyone know what is the point of the wires sticking out the bottom of the stairwell? Are they going to attach tile later?

Also, that Allen AR-21 machine, are those common on construction sites now? I've never seen one before. It's a clever idea, a mini-garbage truck for interior spaces to collect construction waste.

I'm wondering where the guy wires are at? Didn't alan88 say they were due by the end of the month.

And I must say that the antenna has grown on me. It isn't ideal by any means, but as the temporary platforms come off, it is looking a bit better.
