In regards to the sculpture, I like the way it interacts with the tower, instead of passively reflecting the skyline like the Millennium Park Bean does.

EDIT: According to this source, it's actually 830ft:

I've seen that height figure mentioned as well. It'll be an 800 footer, final height will clear itself out. Funny how 80 South Street was about the same height (at 835 ft).

^^^ Classic NIMBY quotes from that same article:

“I don’t really see how asymmetrical stacked glass boxes reflect the architecture you tend to see in Tribeca,” said Julie Menin, chairperson of Community Board 1. “This building is absolutely non-contextual with the rest of Tribeca.”

“This didn’t have to happen,” said Menin, who joined the board after Tribeca South was rezoned. “The rezoning should have included every single site in Tribeca.”

My 5-year-old could design something better than this with his wooden building block set,” wrote one poster on the real estate blog.

Floorplan Porn: 56 Leonard Gets in the Game

Monday, September 22, 2008, by Joey

Our nation's foremost architecture critic, Kanye West, has finally weighed in on Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron's new Tribeca tower at 56 Leonard Street. Mr. West's opinion: "GONE BE NIIIICE!!!"

Also nice: the first batch of listings have hit the web via Corcoran Sunshine, and perhaps because 140 unique floorplans at once would turn our brains into Swiss cheese, only about two dozen Jenga blocks are represented. It's just a taste, but each of the building's "types" are represented: from the "townhouse" apartments below the eighth floor, to the two- to five-bedroom units that make up the bulk of the building, to the half-floor and full-floor penthouses on the top 10 floors. You can find an example of each in the gallery above, and that's the full-floor whopper above. Prices so far range from $3.575 million to $21.5 million, and StreetEasy calculates the average at a healthy $2,661 per square foot. Certainly in Kanye's price range, but the hype men may have to look elsewhere.

I LOVE it. I can see how it's polarizing lovers and haters. It's dramatically different than anything in NYC right now, arguably the world. I haven't been this interested in a sub-1000 footer in quite some time actually. Amazing!

This tower won't take long to top out, even though it's 250 meters tall it's very slim and the structural steel will be easy to assembly.

Original buildings tend to do that.

It would be better if they had just put 10 minutes more thought into it, but as is it's not completely designed. The top is a mess. If the top were designed better it would be a decent building.

Is it actually under construction? (I guess so... too bad.)

If it weren't for the top, this tower would be just another residential building with balconies.
I like the way it's more and more chaotic as it rises.

I mean the very top floor in particular. If it were smaller it would top off the building much more nicely. As it is, it looks like a mistake.

Oh Jack, with all the truly ugly, anonymous buildings going up in the city, why are you so upset by this beautiful, first-class design?

Just a sample of new buildings you should be more angry at instead:

I'm not really that upset, but the answer to your question is because it's 800+ feet tall. You're right; those other buildings you posted lack complete imagination. This one is just faaaaaaaar from what I would call a world-class design. Others may disagree, but we're all entitled to our own opinions.

So it's not world class because the top doesn't fit your idea of what a top should look like? Never mind that Herzog & de Meuron right now is one of the world's leading and well-respected architectural firms.

Fabb already told you that making the top slimmer as it goes up would only make it more conventional. They are trying to break out of that mold and the long held concept that the top of a building should taper. Yes, it may be more graceful looking but they are not going for that look. They want to make this stand out and be different.

Also, the developer here could have very easily chosen the many local hackitects like Kondylis, SLCE, O'Hara, Leyva, etc. that could have given them a nondescript and much cheaper design but they didn't. In this city where we normally get the low cost option, just appreciate that, even if you don't necessarily appreciate the design.

I just have one doubt about the design of the top that, so far, I find alluring : how will it look from the street ?
The above view will be mainly enjoyed by pigeons in their flights... or the dwellers of Ghery's tower. I suspect that, from the pavement, the subtle chaos of the upper section may look like a mess.

i will gladly be an accomplice in any assassination attempts against gene kaufmann.

whether you like the new h&dm building or not, it's at least a counterbalance to the banality of a large chunk of what is going up in the city. we might want all one type of architecture, but it doesn't work like that. look at dubai.

we can take the good with the bad on this one.
