They've poured concrete for a wall already

They are are NOT messing around, they're working really fast-- I'm not complaining.

This is interesting....

The project has really evolved over time. Look at the below comparison of the concept renderings from 2010 to 2013.

Those 2010 buildings would have been great additions to the skyline.

I definitely like the new white facade on the current design, but yeah, those would have been nice, too. They remind me of some of Miami's buildings in the way they're curved and take advantage of water views. One thing I wish we were getting more of is green roofs. We have a lot of opportunities for them with all the podiums.

The Block 1 building is a thousand times better on the 2013 design. That little tower portion on the 2010 design would have looked ridiculous. On the other hand, that skinny little tower portion on the lot west of the Block 1 site in the 2013 design also looks ridiculous. I hope it doesn't end up looking like that.

The 2010 drawings are more architecturally interesting, but the 2013 design is taller and denser for sure. Not a terrible tradeoff.

ummm…I'll still take shorter and more intesting

Damn, maybe size doesn't matter.

I'll alway deny I said that.

But why is it so difficult for Austin to have both...tall and interesting?
And btw, too late...you have "exposed" yourself to the hundreds of thousands of people who read our Austin threads everyday.

Looks like the pillars are going in for the 2nd Street bridge. They're definitely doing this thing now. They're not waiting.

I wouldn't be suprised to see the other buildings change again right before construction starts. The building to the left of the residential tower looks like the design of the twin towers with the lite boxes on top that they released in 1012. My thinking is the final design will mirror the current market trend depending on if its residential, office or hotel. since the building on the right was redesigned, then I think each building will go through a similar process right before they begin construction. Judging by the end result, we could see some pretty dense towers.

There is no doubt that the tower going up is the better choice. Its one thing to have a uniquely designed tower, its another to have an afterthought of bold design on a stubby tower on top of a huge, and I mean HUGE square platform. Its hideous and I agree with Syndic that it would just look awkward. They simply did a much better job with the base and having 6 levels of residential around the pool not only utilizes that space better than the 2010 design, it is visually appealing.

Agreed. The new design that was released a few months ago of Block 1 looks great. The facade reminds me of Seaholm Tower. List of buildings that has changed.

1. Hotel Van Zandt
2. IBC Bank Tower
3. The Catherine
4. The Amli Tower
5. 7 Rio

That's all I can think of at this time.

Check out how Shoal Creek looks in front of the Library. If it really ends up looking like that, it's going to be awesome!

I'm not in love with either design, but the 2010 one is definitely better.

Which of the 2013 renderings are the latest? The overhead view with reddish (brick?) elements in the podium facade, or the grey W-hotel facade? That will be the most prominent element from the street and right now and the reddish design looks bland.

Oh wow the 2010 renders are so much better than the bland boxy 2013 renders. How sad Austin is once again tricked and looses on unique buildings.

Thks is the most latest rendering. I believe this is also the final one as well.

Idk. The 2010 rendering of Block 1 doesn't look impressive, now the other 2 towers surrounding it would look awesome with the new final design of Block 1.
