Can anybody advise what the driving surface is comprised of? After the laughably near-undrivable surface of the James Macdonald Bridge (or has that been renamed in the latest round of PC witch-burning ), I'm hoping that this new bridge isn't a mine field like the JM bridge.

Just drove over it.

Took some video. Will post later.

Very beautiful.

Has a very big city vibe to it.

Have the lighting elements even been installed yet?

Bridge deck is asphalt I believe.

Lighting elements are those circles in the arches.

Yes it is. Smooth and wide (and quiet!).

(Duh), the surface of the JM Bridge bucks and heaves like mad. It has one of the poorest surfaces of any concrete-surfaced bridge I've ever driven over.

Methinks you might be exaggerating a tad, I drive over it at least 4-5 times a week and have never once thought to myself it was rough, and I grew up driving gravel roads daily.

Actually when it was redone it was pretty horrible. Im used to it now, so it doesn't seem so bad. It was also mentioned in the media about the roughness and quality.

The new bridge is neat. You can tell it's a bridge by the way it is.

Very bridgey. I like it!

"you can tell it's a bridge by the way it is"?

you mean because it starts on one side of something and crosses over it to the other side (which is a very bridgey thing to do)?

ps. i like it too although i'm none to happy about some of the execution and detailing.

The bridgiest bridges are long and narrow. If you need superstructure to tell you that you're on a bridge then your bridge isn't very bridgy.

Agreed Ken. Also a fan here but wish the connector plates were addressed as per the original design. Still a gorgeous bridge though.

I should note that now that the Kinetic (whatever that means) LED lighting has been confirmed to still be in scope I'm eagerly awaiting it to be turned on...the Mayor's comments were that he has no idea on timeline for this so I guess....we will be surprised??

it's not just the connector plates, it's also those strange covers at the bottom of the cables that are reminiscent of the bases of the new light poles on jasper ave. it's too bad when beauty doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny as much as it should.

All 3 lanes of the new Walterdale Bridge are open this morning, along with the west side ped walkway. #yeg

OK, excuse my ignorance... there's only three lanes? What if there was a long-range need to make the bridge bi-directional. That seems somewhat shortsighted.
