There is still a long ways to go folks. On track yes, but probably only 10-20% of the way there.

/\ Haha... yeah. Yeah, I'll donate -- When I get out of here... now that I'm stuck a bit longer to finish grad school. Harvard-Yale complex forsure!

I'd like to do a scholarship. Not big, maybe 500-1000/year. And have students compete for it, selling themselves according to my specs to qualify.

Question for all you grads out there. Not just U of A but any university, college etc. Do you donate to your alma mater - on a regular basis, once in awhile, at all?? I have made a habit of donating to my graduating department every year. Even if it is not a huge amount it would add up in a hurry if all us grads did the same.
Even though I got three degrees from U of A (BSc. 92, MBA 93, MSc. 95), I will never donate one penny to that place. I'm still bitter about the research grants I didn't get, the faculties I didn't get into and the callousness many of the advisors displayed towards students who want to finish degrees quickly.

mmm . . . I'm undecided about giving back to the UofA. My undergrad experience was ok there although I probably should have taken it a bit more seriously . ..

Anyway I received a call for donations a few years ago and I said to the lady on the phone that I'd rather set up a scholarship - what would be the process for that. She said I don't know but someone else will follow up. They never called - so I guess either they don't need the money, or they are looking for money to put to other uses than student support. Too bad, their loss.

And these stats are just up until '06-'07.

More recent stats should show the UofA pulling away, Waterloo moving up the rankings quickly, and UdM remaining quite strong as they have secured quite a bit of the research dollars.

University of Alberta cracks top 100

EDMONTON — The University of Alberta again cracked the top 100 in a ranking of the top research institutions globally.

The institution ranked 65th in a study that ranked health, government and higher education institutions on the amount and quality of their published research.

The Spain-based research group, SCImago, assigned rankings based on the prestige of the journals that accepted the institution’s work for publication, and how much researchers collaborated with international partners.

U of A president Indira Samarasekera has said she wants the local school to be one of the world’s top 20 public universities by 2020. It last year placed 75th in the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings, a British-based report...

Yea, by defacto we should expect tuitions to rise, but a possible 66% increase, OUCH!

University of Alberta keeping its fingers crossed

By SHAWN LOGAN

Edmonton Sun

Last Updated: 1st December 2009, 1:55am

Edmonton's Expo gain will also be a major boost for the University of Alberta if the city's bid is chosen.

The primary venue for the event is slated to be built on the institution's south campus, which will see millions in new infrastructure built, providing a legacy for future generations of students.

Indira Samarasekara, the university's president, said the facilities built to showcase the province's energy sector and innovations will become classrooms for future students as well...

Does anybody know if there is going to be any kind of formal relationship between the new AGA and UofA (i.e: Dept of Art & Design)?

Workers have already begun to box out the open sky at the University of Alberta's iconic HUB mall, making a flat roof to solve the perennial leaks caused by our pitiless winters...
