Thanks for clarifying this casa's exact site by dipping into an 1890 record ! BTW - when I entered FORRESTER into LAPL Photo Collection search - Wow! Came up with a 1949 trove of a white slavery trial on "pandering queen" Ms.Forrester-hope she did not besmirch her namesake's heritage! Do check this out (if not a prior entry!)

Ah, Brenda Allen. Brenda has been a favorite noir character here--and she is often mentioned in connection to the Black Dahlia. Put "Brenda Allen" in the thread search--and at least 10 posts on her will turn up. And there is this excellent overview: http://the-wanderling.com/brenda_allen.html

Couple of my favorite Brendas...

First, Brenda's got to eat...

Tin Plate Special, Brenda Allen, 1949

enjoying some of that county fare...

LAPL

Then we have Brenda at her most haughty, eyes flashing behind the signature shades, while Sol labors away at making the case for her...

Brenda Allen released on probation, 1951 (1)

and then Brenda signing out...(a really nice image)

Brenda Allen released on probation, 1951 (5)

And finally Brenda and Sol hit the streets (in this case Broadway, with the Hall of Justice and the Alhambra in the background)

Just a fresh faced kid telling her story, 1940

Brenda Allen, ca.1940

'Brenda Allen Burns today told jurors in the white slave trial how she tried unsuccessfully for three hours to resist the advances of "Glamor Boy" Bristol Barrett and the "sales talks" of men luring her into a life of shame. Brenda Allen Burns had several known aliases: Brenda Allen Burns, Brenda Burns Allen, Brenda Burns, Brenda Burris. Photograph July 18, 1940.'

But Lincoln Heights' reptile problem ended in 1953, when Earnest's grandson, Ken Earnest, moved his legacy of four legged handbags-in-waiting to bucolic Buena Park. Although Bill Haley recorded the alligator song in the 50's, there is not much evidence that the recording or its release was connected to the Alligator Farm or its demise. Both the song and the expression were in use well before the Lincoln Heights reptiles said their final so long. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/See_You_Later,_Alligator

What a difference a year or two can make.

July 14, 1951, Santa Monica court prepares for the business of dispensing Justice.

August 1958. Same building entrance, a little landscaping - seven years later. Fresh faced fourteen y/o Tuesday Weld - seeking contract approval.

Fantastic! I wish whoever took those had done the same thing for all the streets of Downtown!

I really agree Scott, I love em. Several are so good they stand alone and if we were ever to have a noirish Los Angeles get-together, I'd want to have it at Dave's Music Box, which is, of course, alas long gone.

I have to agree, 'the Main Street between 6th & 7th' photographs are some of the best that I've ever seen.
Also, great post on the alligator farm bifrayrock...very impressive.

Thanks for the information on the 'Dick' Whittington Studios GaylordWilshire. It's much appreciated.

An exceptional 'noirish' snapshot found on ebay. I would love to know where the photographer was located (a nearby hotel?)

After using 'google earth' for the last half hour..I've decided the photo is looking north on Rampart Boulevard.

below: Does anyone recognize this building and it's rooftop sign? (or the building directly across the street with the billboard)

I've posted quite a few cable railway photos but I somehow missed this one.

Metro Library Archive

This reminds me of the EL in Chicago. I wonder if there was ever a proposal to build an elevated rail system in downtown Los Angeles?

Do not recall seeing this particular photo of the San Fernando Street Elevated. A note accompanying this photo indicates abandonment in 1904 - approximately 5 years after its construction. Abandonment, as distinguished from demolition?

Have previously seen this lithograph (ca.1877) in much larger format, but perhaps not on this forum. (Print was memorable because it was before Brooklyn H[e]ights acquired an "e" in its name) Wish the search functions, or my ability to navigate same, were a bit more up to snuff. Sorry if its a duplicate.

Nice! I can just make out the giant old sycamore tree that gave Aliso St. its name. And there's Macy St.'s covered bridge over the Los Angeles River again, too. I'd love to see the large format version of this old pano sometime!

Fascinating how both structures take advantage of the "layered" (or "littered") look. A precursor to the Transformers? PreGoogie?

Alligator Ranch, a misguided homage to Mt. Vernon, the Parthenon and Noah's Ark? Is the uppermost structure originally from a covered bridge? Same imaginative designer responsible for the Gator water slide (see above), before being eaten by the gators?
