Far on the other side of Washington state from Seattle lays Spokane, and I had an hour or so Sunday to take some quick photos while I was passing through. Here we go...

4) Spokane's shopping district - I am personally impressed by this city's ability to retain large department stores downtown when much larger cities cannot.

8) Massive expansion of their convention facilities along with a new large convention center hotel is eating up what was a huge parking lot. Good job.

10) Speaking of hotels, the grande dame of old Spokane, the Davenport. First hotel in the US to be air conditioned I found out recently. The more you know...

Ahhh yes, Spokane. It's a hidden gem in the great Inland Empire. So glad to see there are still so many of the older buildings still going strong, and a nice mix of new as well. I had to go there for an overnight back in '71 for my draft physical (once Washington State Univ. kicked me out). Sad to say I can't recall which hotel they put us in (there was about 20 of us). Very walkable downtown. Thanks for the pics.

Nice pics....glad someone has posted newer pics of Spokane. What I still find kind of eerie (for lack of a better word) when visiting downtown Spokane is the lack of pedestrians milling around downtown. The streets usually seem pretty empty and it feels kind of weird because the downtown buildings makes it feel like you are in a bigger city, but the people are missing. And the downtown is really nice compared to when I grew up there in the 90's. Hopefully with more people living downtown (thank you Ridpath) that will change. With all that being said, when we do go home to visit family and go downtown, it is kind of nice to not have to deal with traffic or searching around for places to park, which is a nice change from living in the Seattle area.
Awesome little city. Just the other day I was telling someone about how impressive the downtown is for a city that is so under the radar.

Inland, where would you say is a good place (if there is one) in Spokane for finding good cheap hotel room with good transit access?
hey mSeattle - I haven't had to stay in a hotel there in a long time; my parents live in Coeur d' Alene so free lodging! You might want to check out Hotel Ruby, it's a fairly inexpensive remodeled motor in type place (like Portland's Jupiter) and close to the main bus terminal.
I get a Spokane affiliate on my cable tv up here in Winnipeg.. always wonder about that place when im watching that channel and a news blip pops up during the commercials. thanks for the tour!!
