Here are some old pics of Vancouver from Fred Herzog. He actually has an exhibit starting (started?) at the Vancouver Art Gallery. I can't get any bigger versions at the moment...

Although it would be time consuming, it would be nice to see all of those shots with the present-day shots at the same location just to compare
Here's the best I could do. original

And now looking the opposite direction at the same area...these are outdated themselves, from August of 2004 before the revitalization of Charlotte St which surprisingly turned out well. Unfortunately, they're the most recent I have.

^The green building you can see a piece of at the far left is the Radio Building

^The original picture was taken from in front of the red older building at the far right of this photo with the plywood on it just before it renovated for new tennants.

I love threads like this one. Thanks to all who've contributed. Makes an older guy very happy (and a bit nostalgic).

It looks like the small towns, not surprisingly, are where the downtowns really declined.

Toronto may look interesting in these old pictures but I think people used to the modern city would find 50s Toronto pretty small, boring, and poor if they somehow went back in time.

Those photos are amazing.

It makes me sad to see that pretty much all Canadian cities had trams/streetcars and now they are all gone with the exception of Toronto

Some cities are slowly re-introducing the street car. I hope it becomes the norm again.

One of my fave photo threads ever! thanks for these..Loved the neon in 1950's Montreal and how vibrant the Downtowns were in all of the cities shown.Winnipeg looked fantastic..Yup, the burbs and cookie cutter box retailers certainly killed the downtowns of yesteryear.

So happy this thread resurfaced, I have a couple photos kicking around and wanted to share them outside the Canada forum.

Stephenville, Newfoundland - Mid-1950s - population at this time was about 5,000. Today we are closer to 7,000.

Main Street Bens Pharmacy

Main Street 54

Just for reference, here is one of the present looking in the same direction as that 2nd photo (taken at 4am, thus the empty street):

Don't see any differences from USA. But today, Canada is more Asian and French.
