Arena appears on budget, construction set for March, city manager says

BY GORDON KENT, EDMONTON JOURNAL

EDMONTON - Edmonton’s downtown arena is on course to meet its $480-million construction cost and should be ready to start construction in March, city manager Simon Farbrother says.

“I would say we’re very close to the end,” he said Thursday.

“A lot of the heavy lifting on this building has been completed. We’re now moving into the implementation stage.”

Staff from the city, the Katz Group, PCL Construction and project manager Icon Venue Group have been working for more than 18 months to ensure the arena meets the required guaranteed maximum price.

Final figures are expected to be ready by the end of the month and will likely be presented to city council Feb. 11, although if they’re within budget councillors won’t take another vote on the project, Farbrother said.

“All indications are that we’re on target … The number will be presented when we have fully verified it’s accurate and complete.”

An update going to city council Wednesday shows that once the price is confirmed, excavation for the site on 104th Avenue near 103rd Street will start in March.

This will be the coolest arena in the league when it's done. So much better than everything else in Canada. The district is a nice bonus. It's great that it is being developed alongside the arena, so they should integrate a lot better than the area surrounding ACC or the future towers around the Bell Centre.

Have not seen some of these before.

Notice the 2 slender tapering towers in this one

News Release

February 28, 2014
City of Edmonton

Rogers Place construction starts March 3, 2014

Construction on Rogers Place (downtown arena) will begin on Monday, March 3, 2014. Construction will take place on the former parking lot between 104 Street and 102 Street, between 104 Avenue and 105 Avenue.

The first work will include fencing off the construction site, placing trailers on site for crews, and starting to clear the site. Then construction will begin, which for the first phase includes excavating soil for the underground parkade and installing concrete piles. This phase will take several months to complete.

Beginning March 3, 2014, the pedestrian sidewalk along the north boulevard of 104 Avenue will be closed between 104 Street and 102 Street.

The north lane of 104 Avenue will be closed between 104 Street and 102 Street for the entire duration of the construction. The exact date for the lane closure is weather-dependent, as crews must first repaint the lines on 104 Avenue.

To facilitate traffic flow, the repainted avenue for these two blocks will include three eastbound lanes, and two westbound lanes. There may be temporary off-peak hour closures of this portion of the north lane until the lane is officially closed for construction.

The main entrance for construction vehicles will be at 103 Street and 104 Avenue (the current entrance to the Baccarat Casino), and vehicles will exit onto 104 Street.

The construction site will be fenced and closed to the public. Signage will be placed in the area to advise the public about the construction activities and redirect casino patrons to the new entrance at 101 Street and 105 Avenue.

The entire project will take about two and a half years to complete, and Rogers Place is scheduled to be completed September 2016. It is an important catalyst in the revitalization of Edmonton’s downtown.

For more information please check edmonton.ca/downtownarena, email coearena@edmonton.ca or leave a voicemail at: 780-442-5296.

The Advanced Computational Modeling (ACM) Group supported 360 Architecture with the design of a series of curvilinear glass façade elements for Rogers Place (future home of the NHL Edmonton Oilers in Alberta, Canada). 360 contracted ACM to perform the technical modeling, surface rationalization, and warpage analysis to allow the glass apertures to be built using cold-bent, quadrangular, insulated glass panels.

360’s design intent was to subdivide the apertures into a pattern of parallelogram [glass] panels. The main question we were trying to answer for each aperture is: What are the ranges of angles and panel sizes that result in buildable (meaning that each piece is flat enough under our failure criteria) configurations? The driving design parameters are: vertical mullion angle, horizontal mullion angle, vertical length, and horizontal width.

In recent years, with generic algorithms gaining popularity for exploration of multi-variable-driven design spaces, this problem would have been solved as a very computationally heavy and slow ‘top down approach’ : Design a good surface, and slice it up in such a way that the pieces are flat enough to build. While this workflow is effective, it is extremely compute-intensive to optimize a ‘good surface’; it takes a long time to evolve one good answer, and you can only investigate one set of design parameters at a time.
So, instead, we thought of an innovative way to address the challenge from the bottom up: Using Kangaroo, a physics simulation plugin for Grasshopper, ACM developed the tools we needed to drive the form-finding process based on our constraints, and to check for fitness based on our design performance criteria on top of Kangaroo and Grasshopper. The video below shows a partial run of one of the apertures using Kangaroo as a platform, along with our custom toolset.
The planarity and range of panel sizes were improved dramatically, and as the approach was much less compute-intensive, we were able to explore entire ranges of solutions in very little time.

Along with the ability to specify the main design parameters described above, the bottom up approach allows for the application of planarization and smoothing forces to the panels in the system. All of these forces act concurrently – and in some cases unpredictably – on the system during the form finding process, allowing us to weight our constraints based on their systems level importance.

Better image of Office Tower 1, Hotel and Condo/Apartment Tower 1 for arena district. Arena is lower and far right for perspective.
