I arrived in Stuttgart's suburbs on a quiet Christmas eve afternoon. The first impression was not appetizing. The main train station is a construction zone. Only this section looks fine. Downstairs, it was a bit messy and there was some urine smell in the corridors.
There didn't seem to be many tourists around, and most shops have closed early for the special occasion.
Unlike other cities in Germany, I felt a bit unsafe here. There were lots of loitering groups of young men who didn't seem to be able to decide what to do with their lives.
Empty. Everyone has gone home as it is 5pm already.
Within the city centre, the various tram lines stop underground. Keep an eye on the arrivals board because they all share the same platforms.
Uphill from the seemingly unsafe core, pockets of lovely modern residentials are surrounded by plenty of green space.
I wanted to go up this tower but they barricaded the staircase. I guess it was on Boxing Day break as well.
If you love cars, Mercedes has a great museum for you.
There is also a quaint tram museum that is only open on certain days of the week. The setting is also quite appropriate - in a tram shed.
I won't drive a Porsche, so I visited their museum. The collection is not as extensive as the Mercedes facility across town. But this one is much closer to the train station.
At the top of the train station, where the Mercedes sign revolves, is an observation deck. The wire mesh ruins the views for your large camera, so you will have better luck with a non-professional digital or with your phone.
