Side question: what is the building on the left of the photo?
It's Britannia House. For the last couple of winters I've sported this nice button which features it... the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation made a series which includes a bunch of notable modernist buildings.

More about the building itself here:

Welcome to the forum. It almost looks as though it's the Newport Centre's little brother.

I PRAY that this building turns out as white and blue (glass) as it appears in the renderings. My heart can't take another beige tower around there.

I think considering the circumstances that I'm just happy this thing is going up. Hopefully it paves the way for further riverfront development along assiniboine and in the downtown area in general.

Agreed. When you cross the Assiniboine River on Main or Osborne, it looks like a canyon is starting to emerge on Assinboine Avenue... a few more towers and it could really be something.

On that note, I wonder if anything will happen soon at the SE corner of Assiniboine and Kennedy? It's such a prime location but it's been sitting empty for a good decade already.

I'm interested in seeing if anything will be done on the lot of that apartment building that burned down on hargrave. seeing how pretty much every building around there has been renovated recently, there has to be demand from someone to develop it. haven't been by there in awhile, maybe its a new, thriving surface lot!

I also hope that they keep the connection to the Riverwalk.

It's crazy (/awesome) to me that a tower that narrow is going up in Winnipeg. The apocalypse must be around the corner.

^ Yes, I'd love to see more skinny towers like that. It's a great antidote to the squat, stumpy looking towers we've seen in recent years. It's nice to see the entire parcel of land used like that.

It seems they are really pushing hard with the good weather. Noticed that they were working Friday afternoon (Remembrance day).

its a cool sight when you walk south down carlton by the true north site and you can see their cranes swinging around along with the dcondo crane going at it down the road at the same time.

Ditto... it's always nice to see a prominent new building rising on the skyline.

Has anybody heard if this project is in financial trouble? Someone in my office heard from a second or third hand source they have or will be halting construction.
