Here ya go, Joejoe. I was driving West on Water as opposed to down Barter's Hill, but it'll give you an idea.

Galgay Sole Voice Of Dissent On Proposed Holloway Street Condo

Quote:

The City of St John's is another step closer to allowing the development of an condominium on Holloway street that Councillor Jonathan Galgay says could obstruct the view for many in the neighbourhood. VOCM's Gerri Lynn Mackey attended council last night and filed this report.

Council has given the green light to a developer for further study regarding a potential condominium slated for Nunnery Hill in downtown St John's. Councillor Galgay was the only member to vote against moving forward and he says the proposed building will completely ruin view planes in the area.

The developer, Commander Ventures is proposing a 12-unit condo in a residential downtown zone. The site, 14 Holloway street will have to be rezoned to be an apartment downtown zone.

Galgay thinks the area should be protected against invasive buildings. He says anything other then small homes or row housing is completely out of context for that sight. Galgay believes that the vacant lot will become more controversial as people learn more about what could go there.

Galgay predicts this development will be one of the most contentious issues facing the down town this year. He appeals to residents to learn more about the proposal and keep in touch with councillors.

This surprises me. I thought it was dead.

I thought it was dead too. Happy to see it's not over, as I think it's a good fit. Who is paying Galgay to persist such drivel?

IMHO this would improve the view plane. Same old song and dance I guess. Can't have city council agreeing unanimously over development in the downtown - just wouldn't be right.

351 Water Street Wins Canadian Engineering Award

Quote:

A new downtown office building has been recognized with a Canadian Consulting Engineer Award for sustainability.

351 Water Street, designed by Stantec for East Port Properties, is the first building in the province to use seawater technology for heat and cooling.

It was the first new office building in the capital city in 25 years and the first to use precast concrete in its design and construction.

The building is LEED Registered, and is looking towards Gold certification.

Stantec captured a total of five awards at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards in Ottawa yesterday.

Does anyone know what is going in that building under construction/reno on Duckworth St. in that last picture? It has been quite an undertaking with the new section they built plus the reno to the existing west portion. Somehow through it all the Fish Depot has survived.

Sadness and joy at plans to turn St. John's convent into affordable housing

Quote:
An estimated $1.52-million gift from the Presentation Sisters is set to be transformed into affordable housing for St. John's seniors.

The Roman Catholic religious order said Thursday that it is giving the 160-year-old St. Patrick's Convent to the City of St. John's.

City officials said — with $1.8 million from St. John's and $2.4 Million from the province — the building will be transformed into 22 affordable housing units.

Four members of the teaching order established the convent on Jan. 10, 1856 in the area then known as Riverhead, in the city's west end.

Since then more than 200 women, such as Sister Patricia Whittle, have called the convent behind St. Patrick's Church their home.

"I'm one of the last sisters to leave. It's a sad occasion but on the other hand this building is going to a very worthy cause so I'm glad of that as well," said Whittle.

She's one of a handful of nuns who lived at the convent until this fall when all of them moved to the Presentation Sisters' main convent, near the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

The sisters initially taught both boys and girls at St. Patrick's Convent School adjacent to the convent, later teaching only girls at the institution, before it closed in 1999.

Need growing 'by leaps and bounds'

"It is truly humbling to receive such a significant gift, we will be forever grateful and we commit to preserving the historical values of the building," said Coun. Jonathan Galgay, who was on hand for Thursday's announcement.

Galgay said that as a child he learned to play piano in the convent and ran amok in its halls.

"If this building survived Councillor Galgay, I'm sure it will stand for a long time for sure," joked Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth.

Ribbing aside, Ellsworth said there is a great need for supportive housing.

"At present our population of seniors is around 20 percent which will grow to 30 percent in the coming years so the demand for providing services is growing in leaps and bounds," he said.

"We are committed to providing affordable housing units for seniors in need of a safe and supportive place to call home."

It's expected the building will be ready to accept new residents in about a year.

Star of the sea is really starting to take shape. Here are a few pics from yesterday. I was in the area again today and there was a line up of 5 cement trucks on site, they are really starting to fill that hole in.

I don't think you could make this look any uglier if you tried real hard!

I like them too. I'm into their modern industrial vibe. Not into the beige though. Are they clad in those fugly metal panels or is it another product?

Really looking forward to seeing the inside of these Hamilton and Brine condos. Anyone know when they're slated to be finished?
