A couple of snapshots of street work being done on Delmar Boulevard in preparation for the Loop Trolley - a 2.2 mile fixed trolley line that will travel from the 100-year old Lions Gates of suburban University City to the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park.

Why are they using T rail instead of tram/girder rail?

This baby is moving fast, in my opinion.

Allegiant now has four flights out St. Louis' MidAmerica Airport (BLV).

Allegiant Air to fly to Las Vegas out of MidAmerica Airport
BY JOSEPH BUSTOS
News-Democrat

Eric Fletcher of Allegiant Travel said tickets from MidAmerica Airport to Las Vegas have already been booked.

Prior to the announcement, commission members were scheduled to vote on an amendment to an airline marketing and use agreement.

The Belleville to Las Vegas route is one of 17 new routes across the country announced by Allegiant Air on Tuesday.

Eric Fletcher, the manager of Airports for Allegiant, said the airline hopes to expand flights in the future beyond Tuesday’s addition at MidAmerica.

“We’re real excited,” Fletcher said. “The community continues to embrace our service. We’ve had people clamoring for seats. We’ve been selling out flights earlier and earlier.”

Flights to Las Vegas are planned to take place twice a week. Depending on the week, flights are scheduled on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Allegiant Air, the airport’s lone airline, currently offers flights from MidAmerica to destinations in Florida, including Orlando/Sandford, Daytona Beach and Tampa.

However, flights to Tampa/St. Petersburg are not scheduled to take place from Aug. 21 through Oct. 8. They are scheduled to resume on Oct. 9.

Loop Trolley cost climbs to $51 million
6 hours ago • By Leah Thorsen
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The cost of building the Loop Trolley has climbed to about $51 million, surpassing the previous $43 million estimate.

The 18 percent spike is attributed, in part, to street paving and landscaping costs. Project leaders have secured a $5.4 million federal grant, and now they’re seeking $3 million from St. Louis County.

Critics say the cost of the 2.2-mile trolley line under construction between University City and Forest Park is too high. And some business owners say traffic hassles caused by construction in the Delmar Loop are hurting them, including a man who blames the trolley as why he had to close his restaurant.

But its supporters argue it already is spurring development and will be a boon for businesses when the trolley brings in visitors. They also say that even with the additional costs, the trolley is being built for significantly less than streetcar lines in other cities.

Perhaps its biggest advocate is Loop businessman Joe Edwards, who has been promoting a trolley since the late 1990s and is the chairman of the Loop Trolley Transportation Development District’s board of directors.

“It’s always better doing things in a first-class way if possible,” Edwards said of the additional money, which also will pay for things such as station-stop furnishings, signals and lighting, as well as for contingencies should bids come back higher than expected.

Edwards said the trolley is attracting economic investment — he cited its fixed tracks as an advantage over a bus route, which can change — including millions of dollars in improvements to the Gotham apartments at Hamilton Avenue and Delmar Boulevard.

“It’s really the future of cities in America,” he said, saying more people want to give up driving and are seeking out transit and walkable communities.

In the Loop, the trolley will share Delmar with cars, similar to a bus, pulling out of traffic at designated stops.

It will run on a single track in the center median east of the Pageant on Delmar and will head south onto DeBaliviere, continuing on a single track on the east side within a new greenway. It will stop and reverse direction at the Missouri History Museum.

Allegiant Air keeps growing flights at St. Louis' Mid-America (BLV) Airport. This is the second new destination to be added within a couple of months.

Flights to Fort Myers, Fla., coming to MidAmerica Airport; $52 one-way tickets being sold
November 19, 2015 11:29 am • By Leah Thorsen
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

MASCOUTAH • MidAmerica (BLV) Airport is set to begin flights to Fort Myers, Fla., in February — its fourth destination through Allegiant Air, the only airline that serves the St. Clair County airport.

Officials formally announced the flight Thursday, as well as some one-way $52 fares.

The sale fares must be bought by Monday for travel through Aug. 17.

And that price is for debit-card purchases — an additional fee of up to $8 each way per passenger could be added for credit card users, Allegiant said. Baggage fees apply to carry-on and checked bags.

The flights will operate twice weekly beginning Feb. 18 on Thursdays and Sundays. Most will be on Airbus A320 planes, which have 177 seats, said Daniel Meier, Allegiant’s manager of airports.

Nonstop flights to Las Vegas returned this month to the airport after a six-year hiatus.

The Las Vegas-based Allegiant suspended all service in 2009 to the airport after a 3½-year run with flights to Las Vegas and Orlando, Fla. Allegiant said at the time that its decision was prompted by “competitive influences” and “weakened market demand.”

Allegiant resumed passenger flights from MidAmerica in late 2012. It currently offers service to two airports in Florida — Orlando-Sanford International Airport and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, which is four miles north of St. Petersburg near Tampa.

MidAmerica Airport opened in 1997. At the time, Lambert-St. Louis International Airport was flush with Trans World Airlines flights, and officials thought the region could use another airport to absorb the spillover.

But the airport, a joint-use airfield with Scott Air Force Base that is 25 miles from downtown St. Louis, has struggled to attract service.

More Delmar Loop Trolley progress photos on the DeBaliviere Avenue tracks and the maintenance facility.

The maintenance facility is being constructed in an old high school building.

After more than a few delays and hiccups, the $52-million, 2.2-mile vintage trolley system is due to open late 2016.

Not since American Airlines started gutting Lambert in 2003, has Lambert St. Louis International Airport been in better shape.

70 non-stops with rumors of British Airways, international cargo and USDA flights on the radar.

Here are some progress photos on the 2.2-mile, $51-million Delmar Loop Trolley connecting Forest Park to The Delmar Loop.

With some months still to go, now they are beginning to cut through the major intersections with new track.

When everybody either laughed or naysayed, Joe Edwards, "The Mayor of The Delmar Loop", kept pushing for the Delmar Loop Trolley.

"Hippie Joe" owns numerous properties along the Delmar strip - including The Pageant music venue, The Moonrise Hotel, Blueberry Hill restaurant (where Chuck Berry still plays to this day) and numerous other properties.

He is largely responsible for the revitalization of the Delmar Loop, which includes suburban University City and stretches east into St. Louis City.

St Louis should just bring back the whole thing. It upsets me that the leadership in St Louis seems to be unaware that they lost two of St Louis' biggest trademarks - it's trolley system and the riverboats. There use to be dozens of riverboats. Now it's down to what? Two?

^Some riverboats are expected to return once the $390-million riverfront overhaul is completed next year. Major riverboat cruises from St. Louis to New Orleans - and other destinations - are to return this summer.

I know chains are frowned upon, I would like to see a national chain riverfront - like we had as children. The McDonald's Riverfront was a big attraction for kids and families. Then the Burger King boat came, but it broke loose from its moorings and was crushed when it hit a bridge then it sunk in the Great Flood of 1993.

A Chick-Fil A Boat? An Imo's Pizza boat? A Chili's boat? LOL.
