Salvador da Bahia, Brazil´s black capital and one of New World´s oldest cities!

Founded in 1549, Salvador (full name São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos, in English: "Holy Savior of All Saints' Bay") is one of the most important and biggest cities in Brazil (at 2.9 million, NOT counting metro area), and capital of Bahia state, in northeast Brazil.

Its known as the black capital of Brazil, due to strong african influence and black population.

This thread is a merge of two SSC-Brazil threads, and I DO EXPECT replies

Thanks for the photos. The city looks big and pleasant. What is the main economy in the city? Does it have big issues with crime? Are the beaches very nice?

sincerely, I dont know whats the main economy of Salvador. I know they have a FORD factory and other industries and a big petrochemical plant... still, I guess the main economy is tourism... the GDP per Capita is less than half that of Porto Alegre, just as a small example (R$8500 for Salvador, R$19000 for Porto Alegre)

northeastern capitals are usually pretty safe for tourists. The beaches are nice, but they really shine in places AROUND Salvador.

Personally, I find the beaches in sout and southeast Brazil more interesting, due to the mountains and hills... but in the northeast, you have more palm trees, usually more beautiful water and specially, WARMER weather and water.

Cool

"Do you have Blacks too?"
Quote:
Washington - It was Condoleezza Rice, national security advisor, who helped her boss out of the embarassing situation. During a conversation between the two presidents, George W. Bush, 55, (USA) and Fernando Henrique Cardoso, 71, (Brazil), Bush bewildered his colleague with the question "Do you have blacks, too?"

Rice, 47, noticing how astonished the Brazilian was, saved the day by telling Bush "Mr. President, Brazil probably has more blacks than the USA. Some say it's the Country with the most blacks outside Africa." Later, the Brazilian president Cardoso said: regarding Latin America, Bush was still in his "learning phase".
Nice Pics!

it isnt surprising Bush said that. He probably thinks Brazil is inhabited by the MYSTICAL race "latinos".

here, two brazilians of the same race, latino!

1.The main economy there is Acarajé, Vatapá, Dendê Oil, Bolinho de Aipim etc...., but also Tourismus, Port, Cacau, Sugar, Alcahool, Fruits and Commerce are the main products.
2. Yes, it has, like the whole country.
3. Yes, they are, the northeast beaches are the best in whole country, warm water, clean and sunny.
