Thunder Bay - 22 Pics

Thunder Bay - 22 Pics

Here are some pictures I have found on Flickr. Most of them are pictures of the Marina at Prince Arthur's Landing, and there are also some from the Kaministiquia Riverfront, and a couple from other places in town.

All of the pictures link to their original photo pages, where it states the author and gives you other viewing options, etc. Enjoy.

Boat slip at Prince Arthur's Landing

The grain elevators and Mount McKay (100ft), best viewed large

More boats!

More boats!

One of many local edificeses known as "The Government Building". ♪Life in a Northern town..♪

They're so tall!!

The Navy Memorial; the fountains in the last picture are the newest addition.

Wow, look at all the boats!

For those of you who give a crap, you can view more of Anthony Neal Macrì's Marina Park photos here, and the rest of his collection here.

Jeanniepaul has captured the marina at night.

Canuck Curt has some pictures of the Kaministiquia Riverfront, specifically, the Sailors Memorial.

The James Whalen Tugboat, now a "museum".

The fabulous boardwalk! Looks like fun!!

From a distance, it looks like he's giving you the finger.

The Bascule Bridges; The first is the McKeller Bridge, which is open. It connects McKeller and Mission islands. The second is the Jackknife Bascule Bridge, almost 100 years old, local sources claim it is the largest of it's kind. (Image by Derek Maliki) Here is another picture that gives you a bit of an idea of how massive it is.

And a few more that I find interesting..

The Advanced Technology Centre, best viewed large.

The city. The white thing is an indoor putt-putt golf.

An old elevator. What's inside you ask? Bird shit and mold. There are pics of the interior in the Thunder Bay Decay Flickr group.

Lastly, something every city has...

The neighbourhood confectionary. This one in particular has a cash register from 1930 (Operated by a man from 1930 ) and the best coney burgers in town. It was voted as the number 1 wonder of Thunder Bay in a contest by the local TV station.

That's it.

Thunder Bay looks quite nice.
So, what's the "Advanced Technology Centre" used for?.....Well, other than "Advanced Technology."

It's part of the University, the building has computer systems and what-not integrated into it. They use it as mainly a research facility but it also has high tech classrooms (wireless internet, satellite link-ups to other universities, etc.) and a couple computer labs.

My place of employment (in Davenport, Iowa) for the last decade has been right next door to a restaurant called......

It's a pretty good place to eat, too.

Cool stuff. Thunderbay seems nice. I was always under the impression that it was a dump from your comments about it Vid.

I was looking through my postcards a few weeks ago and I have one of Thunderbay from the 60s that shows the waterfront.

I thought you might say that.

My godfather buys and sells antique stamps, coins, bottles and the like. He goes to these conventions and venders have all kinds of stuff. I went once and bought about 100 postcards. My godfather also bought a box of about ~2,000 postcards for me for Christmas. Many of them are from the 60s and 70s, but a few even go back to the 40s.

Anyway, Thunderbay was one of them.

Ah, well, I thought it was from the 60s, but the hand written date on the back says July 26, 1984.

Here's the discription on the back:

Quote:
World port on the inland sea.

Though the city of Thunder Bay is geographically in the centre of Canada, it's harbour is the country's third largest, and is serviced by ocean-going ships of all nations. The grain elevators (foreground) represent the greatest concentration of grain in the world (110,000,000 bushels). The world's largest single elevator, Sachatchewan Pool 7, stores 9,000,000 bushels, enough grain to make 2 loaves of bred for every person in North America.
And here's the hand written note from the original sender of the postcard.

Quote:
Dear, so and so, (their name is blanked out),

We are here tonight staying at the hostel - A new experience, like camping. Tomorrow we duck into Michigan for a day where we'll mail this. It will go faster. We are still having a good time. We are "packing up" things that clutter the car. Guess that you know that!
By the way, the postcard was mailed to Oakland, California.

Similar to this picture I have:

The lone elevator in the centre left was demolished in late 2000 and the marine tower of the small one just below the longest elevator (now the third longest, Kansas built a two which are longer but our port still has the highest concentration) was demolished in 1980-something. Most of those have been repainted as well, except for the grey one in the foreground which was never painted aside from the P&H crest on the city side of the silos. The red thing is no longer connected to anything, you can't see the ramp on the card but it was there when this was taken. They no longer store logs in the harbour like that either, that stopped in the mid 90s.

My guess is that it's from 1979 to 1983, that's when the port was at it's peak.

Another interesting tidbit: the area on centre left, cut off by the post card, where you see lots of dirt, is "The Blob", a gigantic toxic spill. It's been all cleaned up, but to this day, even dandelions don't grow there.

This is something similar near by it that has yet to be cleaned:

Cool. So you had just about the same picture, taken at a different time of course. Am I wrong to think that the lake level is lower in your picture? It sure does look like it. I never would have guessed that the lake would really go down much. Drought?

The lake level isn't lower, the brown area is logs. The lake levels are lower now, though, by about 9 inches. Which, when you consider the area of Lake Superior, is A LOT of water. Probably enough to fill up one of the Finger Lakes.
