Melbourne: Quirky, Cultured, Delicious - Part I

I think those three words nicely sum up Melbourne. I had the pleasure of visiting Melbourne recently, and going around Melbourne on the first day reminded me very much of when I first visited Barcelona in 1985...... a feeling of a city that was an underrated gem. The things that struck me the most about Melbourne was the food, which was totally amazing, and restaurants that were in very interesting locales. The Tram car system, which was extremely functional, yet funky, and the vibrancy of the downtown streets. The streets of downtown Melbourne were incredibly busy - which felt like Manhattan - and with excellent streetscapes and retail layout... All in all an excellent city.

I hope you enjoy part I of the tour.

Melbourne has a pretty mild climate by Australian standards it's not that hot there except during the summer.

They're broken 40C in five different months without humidity. My home town has never broke 40C. Nor has Ottawa. While both cities are more humid than Melbourne the point still stands. It's more the winter heat though. No snow is just something I don't think I could handle.

Melbourne's weather is notoriously crazy. 40C one day, and the 22C the next. The days I was there in November (their springtime), I experienced a few days in the 30's... one as high as 38C and a couple of days where the highs were around 20C...really crazy for sure. In fact one day it was 36C and I was at the beach.... by late afternoon it had dropped down to 22C. You should have seen all the people leaving in droves and trying to get on the tram!

They are veterans that work at the Shrine of Remembrance. Very cool guys, I hung out and talked to them for quite a while. They were very knowledgeable about Canada, and one of them had been to Calgary so it was a good discussion.
