I didn't mean to suggest the entire film was shot on location. There is at least one scene shot on location at Grand Central.

Wendy Barrie is escorted here by Richard Greene, who is the male lead in The Little Princess. Greene and Barrie were together in The Hound of The Baskervilles the same year.

Behind Miss Temple is Gregory Ratoff.

[QUOTE=Beaudry;6602914]

This is what it looks like inside; note the SOUND HORN sign at the curve. I was tempted to crawl in and explore but no-one knew I was there and if anything happened it would have been a long night.

Do any y'all know what's going into this area? Someone told me the site is to be an extension of Grand Park. But below is some of the excavation work. That kind of pit is for a great big building, not for sod. Which is sad, because I've always enjoyed the uninterrupted sight-vista in front of City Hall from Hill St. Seems they're looking to erect some (unquestionably inferior) structure directly across from City Hall. Sad.

Anyway, I won't take up any more of your time with non-vintage photos of LA. I will say this, though, being at a demo site under the watchful eye of City Hall sort of "took me back" (to a time I'd never been) as it was eerily reminiscent of when we experienced...The Difficulties.

Beaudry - These "non-vintage photos" like yours are the most important things on this thread. If you didn't go out
and crawl around in the rubble, our chance to see these images would have been gone forever. Thanks.

I think we should try to harness this technology for Noirish L.A. photos - http://www.theguardian.com/artanddes...ow-interactive - definitely makes the photos of D-Day even more impactful.

Does some "suds" taste better upside down? Top lids prone to rust? A beer known to "settle?" Secret beer drinking ritual? Where are Paul's shoes?

Undated photo of Am Legionaries relaxing.

Fructose based sweeteners?

Mid 1950's is a good guess. The newest vehicles seen in the photo are a 1953 Buick and a 1953 Ford pickup.

This twelve sided structure was built by Ramon Alexander on Main St. south of 3rd Street. It was used as a kindergarten (see below).

...and eventually a saloon (I have no proof, simply hearsay)

Exterior view of the Round house, bounded by 3rd and 4th, and Main and Spring Streets, Los Angeles. A woman sits in front on a tricycle. This adobe was built in 1854 by Ramon Alexander as a gift to his Spanish bride, Maria Valdez, daughter of Basilio Valdez, who came to Los Angeles from Spain in 1830. It long housed German immigrant George Lehman's famous beer garden. After the garden closed, the city's first kindergarten was opened here, with Kate Douglas Wiggin as teacher. It was torn down in 1887. Mrs. Anita Alexander Goodwin, daughter of Ramon Alexander, lived on South Flower Street.

Can someone responsible drive home? Dress code?

"Tin Can" said to be on 1201 (N or S) La Brea. (Address provided by source. No directory listing found after cursory search. Suspect it was 1201 N La Brea, Inglewood as current structure (1205) bears uncanny similarity.)

Circa 1938

1960 - 818 W Sixth Street - Darms Market

In 1960 was Darms located at bottom of current high rise? Obviously Darms has departed the scene, but was the entire building replaced or facelifted?

Could well be given the style of the license plates on the cars were used from 1956 through 1962. Unfortunately I have been unable to get a clear blow up of the photo that would give the exact year on the plates.

Safe to say that the Huntington's date is accurate. The '58 renewal sticker was green with white lettering. (The '57's background was red, '59 beige/ivory, '60 blue, '61 red, '62 whitish...)
