Your City's Signature Dish

Okay, I know I tried this thread out a few years back, but I thought I would give it another go.

I'm not meaning a restaurant, but more of a creation, or a dish that's really popular around your city. So popular, that your city can take ownership of it.
So either created in or made popular by your city.

Okay, Ottawa's claim to fame is the beavertail pastry, but I don't see it really.
I would have to say shawarmas, because there are shawarma shacks everywhere here. Probably due to the large Lebonese population in Ottawa.
They are quite popular here anyways..What also may be an Ottawa thing is the amount of pizzerias owned and operated.by Lebonese people as well.
All in all, Ottawa doesn't have a signature dish though..The Beavertail claim is weak at best IMO.

I'm going to state just one obvious one for Montreal, and I'll leave the other obvious ones to actual Montreal forumers..Smoked Meat..Okay, I said it.
Montreal rocks in the signature food department btw.

Others?..When I visit your city, what must I try? Remember, not a restaurant.
Is New England Clam Chowder really a thing in Boston?

Someone else can do Houston (does it even have one? BBQ? tacos?)but for my hometown (Utica NY)

Chicken Riggies, a.k.a. Chicken and rigatonis
Greens, basically seasoned escarole
Tomato Pie, Philly and RI have their own versions as well but Utica's is the bestest.
Half Moon cookies, actually cakes not cookies and not to be confused with NYC's "black and whites"

I believe stuffed jalapeño poppers were invented in Houston. If not that, definitely Texas Cheesesteak.

Am I wrong in thinking poutine and Montreal are synonymous? I guess I am.

Sonoran-style Mexican food is definitely the food I most associate with Phoenix. For a food that's particularly associated with Phoenix, I'd say the Sonoran hot dog.

For Nashville, there are several indigenous foods that are worth trying, but the king of the hill is rather obvious:

Navajo/Indian Tacos (open face sandwich on fry bread) for Northern Arizona. Might be called something else in other parts of the state?

Cincinnati: "Chili" that's not really chili. I despise Albert Burneko to this day for referring to it as "diarrhea sludge."

poutine was not ''invented'' in Montréal, but rather in a region 150 km northeast of Montréal.

Two things come to mind for my area.

The signature dish for Delaware is scrapple. It's more a regional dish, all across the Delaware Valley, but most scrapple is made in Delaware, so I think we get to claim it first.

The signature dish for Wilmington is "Thanksgiving dinner on a roll". Here, it's called a Bobbie, since that's what they call it at Capriotti's, where it was invented. On that note, this is kind of a specific restaurant/establishment, but is in transition. I think I can include this as Wilmington's signature dish because in the past few years, it's swept the nation, partly due to Capriotti's expansion in 10-12 states.

One of the best drunk meals I've ever had was at Hattie B's in Nashville this past fall. Love that place.

Never had one in Phoenix but eat them all the time in Tucson which is closer to Sonora anyway.

San Francisco is probably best known for sourdough bread but it has a few other signature dishes like cioppino (a Mediterrean style seafood stew similar to bouillabaisse) and the Mission style burrito (now popularized nationally in the weak immitations from Chipotle).

I'm also interested to know if Cuban sandwiches are a thing in Miami?

In Chicago.. Foot longs, Deep Dish pizza, or both?

Oddly, I can't think of one for Toronto..It's so multicultural I suppose.

Chopped cheese for NYC. The Yemeni bodegas created that shit and it’s awesome. Also halal chicken and rice; made by Muslim immigrants - a righteous staple of New York cuisine.

Seattle's might be teriyaki (our version). Though it's diminishing after a decade or two at the helm.

Los Angeles has a couple for sure.

We got the French Dip sandwich, invited in LA.

We got Spago's Smoked Salmon Pizza

We got Kogi Korean Tacos

But LA's signature dish may very well be the hamburger - but not just any hamburger - the In-N-Out Double Double.
