Unless there is some underlying bitterness about the CFL exclusivity to Bell/TSN, I'm not really sure I understand this. Seems to be a "cut off your nose to spite your face" type of scenario.
The conspiracy theory regarding Rogers wanting to run the Argos/CFL into the ground in order to remove that hurdle from the path to getting an NFL team seems like more and more of a plausible explanation at this point.

A big question the CFL needs to answer soon is who is hosting the 2016 Grey Cup? I know Ottawa has locked up the 2017 Grey Cup to coincide with Canada's 150th birthday. I see Hamilton as a leading contender for 2016, Edmonton maybe a close second, Montreal possible but the roof risk at the Big O during late November and not being able to support large snowfall amounts might squash Montreal's hopes of hosting for now.

I believe it. I also believe Rogers are morons, because there is no way in hell that the CFL or Argos are some kind of obstacles in the way of Toronto getting an NFL team.

You think so? Seems weird for the league to be involved in something like that... I'd expect that to be a team matter.

Is the Grey Cup game being awarded to Calgary again?

Arash Madani is saying it's just league business

The #CFL major announcement tomorrow in Calgary is not about the Grey Cup after all. Will be about league business.

Even though I know this is probably going to be some sort of ho-hum announcement along the lines of "Freedom 55 Financial is now a proud sponsor of the CFL!!" or some such, part of me is wondering if we're in for some sort of mega-blockbuster, like the CFL has joined forces with the Qatar Sports Investments Authority to establish a new Middle Eastern division for the league?

In other news, the Bombers made headlines by signing Jamaal Westerman (Jabar's brother) as a DE. He played LB through stints with various NFL teams over the years.

He spoke to all nine CFL teams and in the end picked Winnipeg, because, well, who wouldn't?

After the Bus Bombers beat the Market Bombers to win the middle eastern division they can play the Blue Bombers for the GC.

Shaw is now the presenting sponsor of the second half of the CFL season, player awards, and Grey Cup.

Definitely interesting to have a media company other than the broadcasting company be such a front and centre sponsor.

^ The CFL.ca article suggests that Shaw is the presenting sponsor of the Grey Cup which includes doing a "Road to the Grey Cup" TV show after Labour Day... not quite what I'd call presenting sponsor of the second half of the season.

A presenting sponsor for the Grey Cup was just a matter of time... interesting that it's Shaw, though, as opposed to a more typical beer/Tim Hortons/car manufacturer kind of sponsor.

I wonder what it means for the presentation of the Grey Cup? The league bigwigs are suggesting it will be a big deal.

The global article I quoted made it seem more like a presenting sponsor:

Quote:
As part of the agreement with the league, the latter half of the season (beginning after Labour Day Weekend), will be branded the Shaw Road to the Grey Cup.

But isn't Shaw a competitor of Bell, the parent company of TSN? This deal would be cool with them?

And what does this exactly mean for the CFL, other than some more sponsorship revenue?

I doubt Jeff Orridge steps out of the office for lunch unless it's OK with TSN and their parent company, so it must be OK with them otherwise it wouldn't have happened. But yeah, it is a bit odd that a competitor (although not a head-on competitor like Rogers given that Shaw doesn't have a product analogous to TSN) would be given the green light to step up in this capacity.

It must have been a pile of money to make it worth the hassle for everyone... I wonder how much Shaw went in for?

Thanks for the response. I also just noticed this in the CFL.ca story:

Quote:
“We are very excited to work with Shaw in such a significant and impactful way as we cover the journey to the Grey Cup, one of the biggest annual events on TSN,” said Stewart Johnston, President of TSN.
