Comcast chooses firm to design interior of new Philadelphia skyscraper

Architectural firm Gensler has been selected to design the interiors of the new Comcast Innovation and Technology Center.
Gensler is collaborating with Foster + Partners, which designed the structure, as well as Daroff Design Inc., a Philadelphia architectural firm. The goal is to create a “functional, aesthetic, sustainable and progressive interior environment that will effectively integrate with the architectural design of the building,” the firm said in a statement.
The $1.2 billion building at 18th and Arch streets in Philadelphia is under construction and is expected to be completed by early 2018. The structure will house NBC10 and Telemundo. It will also include space that promotes and innovation as well as areas for product testing and tech startups.
Liberty Property Trust of Malvern, Pa., is constructing the building.

They are doing some serious digging at this site today, a line of dump trucks stretched clear back to Market.

Looking good! Both webcams are not working right. So not too sure what they did today, in terms of progress.

Can anyone explain the process involved in forcing those steel rods into the earth behind the retaining wall that lines the perimeter? What is that machine called? Do they drill into the steel beams to pin them to the rock behind the beams?

(Just realized I have no idea how to quote text!)

This system is typically called a temporary shoring. Essentially the soil puts pressure on the wood panels and keeps the soil from falling out. The steel piles (beams) support the wood panels every 10 feet (or whatever the design is) The wood panels can hold themselves up but only up to a certain depth. Once they have dug too deep the wood panels then need to be supported by something else (the steel piles). And that is a pile-driver. It drives the piles (beams) into the ground until a certain force can not push it in any further. This ensures the beam is deep enough that the soil won't give way or compress too much when fully loaded.

But Im talking about the steel that is inserted almost perpendicular to the shoring. There is a machine on tracks that seems to be operated by remote control that injects these steel rods into the the shoring wall and the rock behind it. Im wondering what that is called and what is accomplished by those rods. It seems that they add strength to the steel piles to hold back the dirt behind that retaining wall.

its going to be a while because they have to excavate the eastern end of the site. From what I observed on family court they will move the dirt ramp to another corner on the opposite side and then excavate the side where the ramp sits now. They seem to be at bottom on the 19th street side and much of the arch street side, basically the western third to half of the site seems to be as deep as they will go.

I wonder if they will start working the drilling and core area where its deep enough right? And also if they move the ramp, how will the diggers get out if they dig out the whole site right?

I see a ladder for the workers. More importantly, the heavy equipment needs to be out when they start foundation work.
