Best Pic of Cornell/Collegetown I've seen

I know it's a bigun, but this is the best pic of Cornell Univ and the Collegetown neighborhood in Ithaca I've ever seen.

Collegetown is the bottom 4/5s of the picture (it starts at the business section across the gorge from Cornell University).

Pic by Bill Hecht from the website www.rootsweb.com

Awesome picture. My brother played football at Princeton and he spent four years traveling around seeing all of these classic schools; Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Colgate, Brown, etc. Every time I see a picture like this it makes me wish that I had went to a East-Coast school.

Thanks wong. I've yet to visit Princeton and Yale, but hope to remedy that in the next couple of years.

REally nice! It looks like a very large campus. No shortage of greenery, I see.

Thanks Wheels and PAP. Ithaca is covered by tree canopies. Funny that a city ubder 30,000 has its own forester, and he has a directive to ensure any tree cut down is replaced somewhere nearby.

This displaces some perceptions I had about Ithaca. I always heard it was boondockish (except for the campus, of course) - literally the college being in the middle of nowhere. However, it looks like there are definitely municipal streets surrounding it, so it's more urban then I thought (although a lot of those houses are probably fraternity/sorority). My Spanish tutor's son goes there as will at least one person that graduated with me this year. Looks beautiful (although that one building to the left of the clock tower is a little unsightly).

^ The picture doesn't cover much of the city itself (for instance you can't see any of downtown), and with so many trees a lot of the buildings are nearly impossible to see. The building to the left of the clock tower (I think you mean the concrete building blocks looking one) is the Johnson Art Museum which was designed by I.M. Pei.

Thanks for the response c_d.

Now I feel bad, because I love a lot of I.M. Pei's work: The Louvre Pyramid, Bank of China Tower-Hong Kong, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...

Maybe it's just at a bad angle...any better looking up close?

Oh man! You can even see my house from senior year! (very end of college ave--the road that comes straight down from the clock tower--the gray rickety one with a flat roof). I just graduated in May and man does this picture make me miss Ithaca. Can't complain though, since I just moved back to San Francisco... though I am still unemployed...

Thanks for posting this Ex-Ithacan!

Also, for those interested, you can see Sibley Hall (big white dome) in this picture, the building that houses the Architecture and Urban Studies (my major) departments. I spent way too much time in that building...

Honestly, that picture paints it in a much better light. I knew Pei wouldn't let me down!

You're very welcome CUCa. Glad you've joined us here. btw, if you check out the News in Ithaca thread in the Northeast Forum there's a pic of the rendering for the proposed Milstein building over University Ave next to Sibley.
Hope you enjoy your time on the forum and have some good fortune looking for a job.

Ah...I can see my dorm...the roof of my frat...the building I have classes in that looks like a stoner tried to design a castle...where I work...wow, I can see much of my life in this one image. That's a little scary.

Ex, I just had to comment again. Even if the moratorium goes through because of some near-sighted planners, this is still a great photo. Thanks for sharing.

^ Yeah Vis, I like to check it out every once in a while myself. Seems like I spot something new every time. btw, have you checked out you tube ("Ithaca") lately? There's a couple of vids from a guy who lives next door to that new apartment building under construction on Dryden Rd, and he ain't a happy camper.
