Any nerds here?

haha, stupid question.

Anybody here play Sim City 4? I've recently become very addicted and have am working on a region approaching 1,000,000 people and wanted to talk to someone else who plays on some different planning ideas, designs, etc.

My largest city, right now, is about 200,000 with 75,000 commercial jobs and a huge stock of densly populated high rises. It's pretty neat.

I'll try to get screen shots when I get home this afternoon, but there are areas of some of my cities that are downright depressing. My newest town, of 50,000 (and rapidly growing) has huge neighborhoods that are going abandoned due to commutes to jobs being too long, even though they are within walking distance of bus routes, across the street from commerical districts, and near hospitals and schools. I'm utterly confused regarding how to fix this.

If nobody plays, then oh well, I guess I've just exposed myself as the biggest nerd here.

There's a dedicated SC4 thread somewhere here on the forum, maybe in Skybar or the Urban Art section.

John,

Go to the Forum home page here:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/

and at the bottom is a Search function. Make sure the forum box is x'd and type 'sim city' and you get a bunch of forum threads on all the game versions. I only played Sim City I and II back in the day.

Jeff

I just got back into this game, but it's unstable on my machine since i built a freeway with the Network Addon Mod, so I can't really revert.

Do you use any mods or plugins?

My first city is planned around a 5x5ish grid of 6x6 tiled spaces separated by roads. Every 5 or 6 blocks is an alternating one way around a greenbelt with a subway underneath. I'm having major issues with commute time and sustaining demand for larger office towers...

I find that too many subways and one way streets cUse problems. My newest city i started yesterday was building high rises at 4,500 population.

Wealthy sims don't use public transportation no matter how hard you try. If you don't have it, there is a patch on the SC4 site at EA... apparently, the game engine was bugged. I spend most of my time lately working on my airport using Joerg's Airport Pack.

Wait... So all that time i spent designing a subway system that went through even the rich neighborhoods and high wealth offices is useless there? Damnit! My cities areall rich people. I try to build ghettos but none of my cities are demanding dirty industry.

You don't need dirty industry to get low wealth residents, you just need to go into your in-depth tax screen and adjust the rates accordingly. Wealthy sims just prefer their own vehicles.

I usually change my maps to put medium cities in between two large cities... this way I can have high wealth and medium wealth suburbs by adjusting tax rates, while having a large low wealth population in my biggest cities.

I tried that yesterday... not much luck. I made low wealth 3% tax and taxed the shit out of everyone else. Instead of only poor people building homes, NOBODY built homes. Finally I lowered mid level taxes and my city went from 5,000 to 40,000 in a blink of an eye.
