Thanks for the follow-ups on Baer's Market, 17th & Montana Ave. and Weller Court on 2nd and Onizuka.....I appreciate it.

Here's another mystery slide, folks.

Original 35mm Slide, HILL TOP MOTEL & TRAILER PARK, Santa Monica California [c.1963]

eBay

I believe we might have discussed this place, but I don't believe we have seen this 1963 view of the interesting sign.

Does anyone remember where the Hill Top Motel and Trailer Park was located?

re: "c.1914 Family Photo of Ford Touring Car on Vermont and Hollywood, L.A., Calif."

Apparently that large white house we can see in the far background was the home of William Mead, the original developer of Los Feliz, located at 4533 Cockerham Drive. Though almost unrecognizably remodeled, the bones of the house remain standing at the foothill head of Vermont above Los Feliz.
Here is a fantastic family photograph that was posted on eBay, yesterday.

"c.1914 Family Photo of Ford Touring Car on Vermont and Hollywood, L.A., Calif."

eBay

The seller added this:

"This photo taken by my Grandmother about 1914 of my father (age 3 or 4) next the the family Ford Touring Car parked on Vermont Ave at Hollywood Blvd in front of his dad's store, viewing north on Vermont toward Griffith Park and the Hollywood Hills, Southern California. This and other photos were reprinted by my father in the early 1950s for local newspaper articles on the history of East Hollywood. This image is from one of a few sets of these original gelatin silver images he printed from the original negatives. The photos were taken by my grandparents between 1902 and 1918."

note the large mansion in the hills at the end of the street. (Vermont)

Frank's at the beach. (mystery location)

I found this fantastic 1952 slide last night on eBay

"Orig 1952 Muscle Beach, Santa Monica CA 35mm Kodachrome Photo Slide."

eBay

The seller has this labeled as Muscle Beach....but, unless I am mistaken, this is..dare I say.. north of Santa Monica Pier, right?

Here's a closer look at Frank's Good Food.

note the parking attendant and parking sign. (off-duty policeman?)

The Year 2000 - The Distant Future!

Wonder if there'll flying cars by then, like The Jetsons!

I strongly doubt Ford will still be selling Mustangs in 2000 (or even 1980)...

The Frank's slide is no doubt labeled 'Muscle Beach' because the seller also has this slide from 1952.

Now THIS is MUSCLE BEACH!

Orig 1952 Muscle Beach, Santa Monica CA 35mm Kodachrome Photo Slide

eBay

I believe I recognize the guy in the blue speedo-like trunks. I've seen him in an old video clip of a celebrity's beach party in Malibu. He's an actor.

Lastly, the eBay seller has this slide, also from 1952.....

"Orig 1952 Muscle Beach, Santa Monica CA 35mm Kodachrome Photo Slide"

eBay

This, most definitely, is not Muscle Beach. I don't even think this is California.

'30 Census reportedly lists his family (Yule) at 762 Marathon Street. Mickey and (then) wife Barbara, were listed in '45 Van Nuys CD at 4410 Densmore Avenue.

762 Marathon Street was/is located near the LACC campus at Vermont. Marathon may be more familiar as a location for Paramount Famous Players Lasky (5451 Marathon Street)

I researched this ad. Its a hoax. Rooney never owned such a restaurant as this but he did own a BBQ joint at one time. This ad and others was created by artist Chris Shapan, well known for fake record albums also.

I'm somehow comforted by the fact that it's fake, and yet I'd like to try The Grand Royale just once.

Free handshake and Live Drumming on Sundays.

Yep. Since it wasn't in the CDs nor on the map, it was fairly obvious. The background sure doesn't scream SF Valley either (although the Carolina Pines on La Brea doesn't seem a natural fit either.) https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCo...hollywood_usa/ Somewhat reminiscent of a bogus "Walt's" Hollywood Blvd. Restaurant once discussed on NLA. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=23018

We couldn't find Mickey Rooney's fake restaurant because it burned down! Probably just as well after a 22-year-old waiter suffocated in the rubber Mickey Rooney mask he was required to wear .

One can only hope that much of Mickey's "potato starch magic" can be recaptured and the structure is rebuilt and restored to its former glory.

Quote:
Her first movie at Fox was The Ghost Talks (1929), which director Lewis Seiler requested she play with a lisp. “It may have been cute to him,” Helen told journalist Dixie Tighe in 1931, “but it was an acute crisis for me. I found that out when the picture was released and the critics all said, in effect, ‘Helen Twelvetrees is a nice girl. Too bad she lisps.’” Based on something Helen told Wood Soanes in 1932, Seiler’s decision to have Helen play the part with a lisp was not totally out of left field: “In Roulette I had played a sort of baby vamp featuring a lisp and the Fox producers had hired me because of my lisp.”
Quote:
By this time of her greatest initial success, Helen’s first marriage was over.Just a few months after they had married, Clark Twelvetrees fell out of a sixth floor window at the Hotel Royalton as “his wife looked on.” A car below broke his fall when he landed on and demolished the fender. Period reports claim he then got up and staggered into the hotel where he collapsed in Helen’s arms. At the time Helen called it an “accidental mistake,” claiming they were at a friend’s party when Clark fell out the window, though she later admitted he was despondent and jumped. While the incident was likely the most violent of the couples’ ups and downs, Helen did charge Clark with beating her up on four occasions when she split once and for all from him in a divorce granted March 26, 1930. She testified, “He was drunk when I married him, and I did not see him again for two days. I thought I could change him, but now I have found out it can’t be done.”

Creepy cat marquee at Bakersfield Fox Theater, circa 1946. (Yes, not that far from noirish Los Angeles - Bakersfield.)

https://tessa.lapl.org/cdm/singleite...otos/id/113337

Quote:
Opened on Christmas Day 1930, The Fox was one of the last of its kind built in the Gilded Age. The first film on The Fox’s big silver screen was “Just Imagine”, a sci-fi tale set 50 years in the future to 1980. The Fox featured the first “talkie” motion pictures and its stage was graced by live performers who among many were prestigious artists such as Bakersfield native Metropolitan Opera baritone Lawrence Tibbett (1933), world-renowned soprano Kirsten Flagstad (1939), the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (1939), and the classic pianist Arthur Rubinstein (1940).
The 1500 seat Fox Theater was designed by famed Los Angeles architect S. Charles Lee. Known for his trademark “The Show Begins on the Sidewalk;” his designs would later gain classic status as paragons of style and beauty. The Fox Theater’s Type I construction consists of poured concrete over steel which would prove itself by withstanding in the 1952 earthquake. In 1953, the original Mediterranean Village interior was replaced with a contemporary Art Deco motif inspired by Fox West Coast Theaters’ Charles P. Skouras. A lavish concession area was added, along with a remodel of the marquee, box office and main entrance — embellished with glitzy 50’s bright metals, terrazzo and neon. http://thebakersfieldfox.com/fox-the...eater-history/

A Tea Garden in East Lake Park?

eBay

We have visited East Lake Park (now LINCOLN PARK) many times on NLA...but I don't recall any mention of a 'quaint' tea garden .

A very brief history for newcomers.

"In 1881, the City of Los Angeles created a local attraction called East Los Angeles Park.
In 1901, it became Eastlake Park before the name changed a third time to Lincoln Park in 1917.
The park’s address is 3501 Valley Blvd., Los Angeles, CA."
