Vasquez Rocks Park, one of Hollywood's favorite locations for outdoor filming over several decades, is so named because Tiburcio Vasquez often used the area to avoid capture by law enforcement.

On May 14, 1904, Sunset Boulevard opened.

The Los Angeles Herald enthused:
“Los Angeles and Hollywood united yesterday in celebration of the opening of Sunset boulevard and its adjacent systems. The splendid highway was inspected by nearly 2,000 Los Angeles people, who proceeded to Hollywood in vehicles of every sort, ranging in design from a high-geared automobile to a goat cart."
On May 14, 1935, Griffith Observatory was formally opened with a ceremony for 500 invited guests.

There's a nifty little history of the observatory here.

Did I miss any May 14th events related to Los Angeles?
Handsome Stranger - You touched on something very interesting. What would we call a group of us Noirishers? What is the collective noun we would use to describe a bunch of us together? We all know these:

A gaggle of geese
A flock of birds
An army of ants
A swarm of bees
A flight of butterflies
A pod of whales
A school of fish
A herd of elephants
A pride of lions
A parliament of owls

A black hole of Noirishers?

I'm sure with the collective intelligence and creativity of this august group we can come up with a good collective noun. How about it?

I don't want to be a black hole.

I am surprised you missed "A murder of crows", which is pretty Noir-ish if you ask me.

Tunnel Construction

Here is another snapshot from the "Claire & Clio" photograph group. [1918 - 1920]

Ebay

hmmm.....that might be Clio sitting on a rock to the left of the excavating thingy (steam shovel?).

Unless I am seeing things...there appears to be a man straddling the hood of his car on the far right of the photograph. > > >

Scott Charles, is it possible to get rid of that glare?...(or if anyone else wants to give it a try that's good too)

I hope Beaudry bids for the photographs.

How did you know?! I have an esnipe bid in—I love all the pix of course but this one (which is a little later than 1918-20, probably about 1922, judging by the progress on the tunnel) especially moved me to bid on the lot. Of course I'll scan and share with the group so as to answer all the mysterious questions about Clio, hood-straddling, etc. I won the recently-discussed shots of Fourth and Olive, btw! And for peanuts! (Though there were a gaggle of nice neony LA slides I was recently outbid on, alas.)

I also purchased that $29 1949 Broadway tunnel negative. I have a lot to say on the subject of reproducing eBay images here, on cleaning them up, how sellers and collectors might feel...but that will have to wait for another time. I need to run and get my hair cut and pack—Avalon Ball weekend begins tomorrow!

That's such great news, Beaudry. I hope you win the bid!

I just noticed that there's a second snapshot of the house being moved!

Ebay

I think this is the same house, minus the bric a brac.

HERE is the photograph I posted yesterday of the house jacked up.

Oh yeah, definitely the Stanley, née the La Nel (E J Borgmeyer, 1913). Here's another pic like the one eBay, from 1921

TEE HEE

I was just kidding around, but now I think it is Claire & Clio.

I don't think it is the same house in both pics E.R., there is a couple year gap in the photo dates.

By the way, is it my imagination or did these girls really age between 1918 and 1919?

These two girls showed up in more places than Kilroy did during WW2

It's nice to put names to familiar though blurry faces. I think this is Claire and Clio - the Heller sisters.

Here in their early twenties living with mum and dad, Charles and Cecelia, at 741 W. 11th Street in 1930. They were living there when the pictures were taken.

rescarta.lapl.org

Dad Charles maybe had a thing about moving buildings. He had one moved himself in 1923.

Wow! That's some mighty impressive sleuthing, Noir Noir.
I'm not sure how you did it, though. How'd you figure out their last name was Heller? (you don't have to answer my question if it's a trade secret)

I am sure -at this point- some of you are experiencing Claire & Clio fatigue. . .

...but there have been additional sightings.

#1

Ebay

Do you see her?

Let's take a closer look.

If you look closely, the word Clio & an arrow appear in the rocky terrain.

Now it's getting downright spooky.

In this 2nd pic, her mom (or her father) had Clio back up even farther! (not taken on the same day / the excavation has progressed)

#2

She's barely perceptible. Ha Ha

REVERSE

"Clio in the distance"

I don't know about you, but I don't believe I'd send my little girl down into a giant excavation pit.

When I first saw the photographs I wondered if her father worked for the excavation company. (Noir Noir's research says Clio's father was a dentist)

Claire is missing in action.

Does anyone know what these two red wagons/railcars(?) are for? One appears to be attached to overhead wires.

I decided this one should be seen larger.

It is the only slide where you can see the MODE O DAY sign.

The slides are being sold as a group on Ebay

p.s. My numbers are kind of wacky.

Since this photo looks west from Figueroa and Orange (now Wilshire) on January 23, 1920, I wonder if the house being moved
is the old Samuel Foy home, on its way from 651 S. Figueroa to 625 Witmer? The permit to move the Foy house (in two sections)
is dated eight days before the photo was taken.

I well remember the Foy residence on Witmer. I used to drive by it often. In later years it was painted a not-unattractive, pale aqua/mint green color with white trim.

1337 Carroll Avenue. The home was moved overnight on Dec 8/9 1992, according to LAT reporting at the time (although wiki pegs it at 1993):

I'm pretty sure we're looking east. That bag company building beyond the Brew 102 complex, I think I recall seeing it back in the old days when I would be departing east (homewards) from downtown on the Santa Ana Freeway. It could be that NLA has had a view like this long ago (I still consider myself a newbie). Someday some lunatic incredibly talented person who has a lot of time will make an index to NLA which would assist with this sort of situation!

Isn't the Brew 102 area where the old Aliso tree that pre-dated the founding of L.A. was located?

That's looking east and the Aliso tree was at the Brew 102 brewery. They recently installed a marker commemorating it's location: https://homesteadmuseum.wordpress.co...e-los-angeles/.
