Here are a couple more slides from the group. [c.1966]

Some valuable land not yet in use.............................................I'm not sure what's going on in this upper right corner. (maintenance area?)

Where Shamoo?

I spy the Souvenir Shop! (orange trash receptacle in front)

The casual al fresco dining experience (i.e. snack bar ) appears to be on the roof of one of the buildings.

The middle building might be...restrooms?

Thanks CBD. ...I wondered where the restaurant was in the scheme of things! I can see how my family missed it...especially in the fog.

Martin, I see that there's a small road that goes from the pier up to Marineland.

That tuck and roll upholstery brings back memories. My grandfather had a wet bar in his Westchester house. It had that same white and yellow pattern, only the arm rest was yellow, not blue.

Here is another place that is not around anymore.

My Photo

Lion country Safari was down in the Irvine/Laguna Hills area, off the 405 Freeway.

We were there around 1975-1976.

It was kind of fun. You drove around in your car, and the animals wandered around loose.

My Photo

You stayed in your car, unless you wanted to be part of lunch.

My Photo

It lasted until about 1984 , when they realized that there was more profit in building expensive houses.

A mystery location.

"1915 Los Angeles Bungalow - Aunt May Hopper Young on Front Porch."

eBay

Did Hedda Hopper have a sister living in Los Angeles?

REVERSE

Hmmm....Maple St. with a question mark.

Here's an enlargement of the street address above the front porch......I believe it might be...3341 (?)

Detail

Hi May!

Pioneer Cafe, 8739-41 S. Vermont, Los Angeles Calif....PL - 9512

Rediscovered in an old file of mine

I thought I would take a shot in the dark and google google images for "Pioneer Cafe Los Angeles".

After looking at photographs of Pioneer Pigeon Chicken..this black and white photograph popped up. [see below]

"Mr. Yukio Suzuki, owner and operator of the Pioneer Cafe."

calisphere

but as you can see, the address is different.

I checked the 1940 phone directory and the Pioneer Cafe was at 421 E 5th, so I guess it was waiting for Mr. Suzuki after his "time away". The 1956 reverse directory lists a Pioneer Club at the 8741 S. Vermont.

ETA: The reverse directories list the Pioneer Club at 8741 S. Vermont though 1987, the location is a pawn shop now.

My mom took me there when I was a kid, FredH. It's hard to imagine such a place existing today; your car door was the only thing between you and the lions.

Nowadays, you'd probably get some idiot Instagram “influencer” running out to pose for pictures with the lions. I don't know how/if the laws were different back then, but such a place seems like it would be impossible to insure nowadays.

A Lion Country is still operating in Florida. The Safari park is in Loxahatchee, Florida

A mystery in the West Adams district.

"Los Angeles CA RPPC Photo Postcard Boy in Car Driver's Seat at 2170 W. 25th St.*

eBay

If the car is any indicator..the family appears to have been rather well off.

The address is on the REVERSE

GW, I thought you might know what family lived at 2170 W. 25th St.

*2170 W. 25th St. is a block north of W. Adams..near the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library.

In this area.

Let's take a closer look.

Does anyone recognize what kind of car this is?

It's either a British car or the photograph is flipped. (the steering wheel is on the wrong side for an American car)

It's the legendary Oldsmobile Limited, and they were right hand drive:

You can see the mounts for the dual spares in the above picture.

Cheers,

Earl

Edit: Looks like I was in error. The vehicle in E_R's post is more likely a Packard, not an Olds, as noted by WS1911 in a later post.

Loves

There was a time when Love’s Wood Pit Barbecue restaurants dotted the California landscape and seeped into other states, as well. Some folks believe it’s impossible to get decent barbecue in a chain. You need a small, one-of-a-kind restaurant in a building that used to be a welding shop and was converted by some guy who’s obsessive about good bbq and has been doing it all his life. I’ve been to some great places that fit that description and also some where the food was close to inedible.

There were some changes of ownership and some lawsuits in the Love’s operation. A lot of them closed and the ones that didn’t changed names. The Love’s in Brea, for instance, changed its name to Riley’s and went on serving the exact same menu for years. The one in Chula Vista renamed itself The Great Rib Restaurant, which was a subtitle that Love’s sometimes used in its advertising and on its signs. Eventually, all such after-life Love’s closed. According to the company website, there’s still a Love’s in Jakarta, Indonesia but I’m skeptical that’s so. If it exists, it’s the only one.

Lawry’s

Lawry’s was in a building on the east side of La Cienega. Then they outgrew that and in 1947, they moved into the above building on the west side of the boulevard. A few years ago, they rebuilt the old building and moved back into it, and the building depicted above turned into a restaurant called The Stinking Rose, where everything (including — no kidding — the ice cream) is rife with garlic.

Does anyone have a picture of M'Goos Restaurant?

There were at least three M’Goo’s Restaurants — one in Pasadena serving the Cal Tech crowd, one in Westwood Village serving the U.C.L.A. crowd, one on Hollywood Boulevard serving transients and derelicts, some of whom had once been in the Cal Tech and U.C.L.A. crowds.

Yeah; I remember reading somewhere that in the early days of motoring, it didn't really matter what side the steering wheel was on because most cars back then were open and narrow, and rode high (by modern standards), and you could see a mixed bag of cars with right hand drive and left hand drive. It wasn't until cars became enclosed and wider that it made sense to put the steering wheel on the side of the car that would be closest to the center dividing line of traffic.
