Just a note - I updated my post about 20 minutes ago with an additional photo of the Times Building with State Building under construction, so if you saw it before then you might want to back up and reload.

OMG ProphetM. This is quite a discovery!!

They're exposing the foundation of one of Los Angeles' most iconic buildings. Do they even know it?

Excellent job (as always) in fleshing out the history of 3173 Wilshire Boulevard GW. I thought it was monkey glands.

I submitted the info to the LA Times with a link to your Flickr, in case they might actually want to check it out.

Incidentally, I hope I'm not the only one who thinks the new LA Times site design is absolute garbage. It's irritating in the extreme, with dead space on the sides, stuff popping out at inopportune times just because you put your mouse cursor in the wrong spot, and a never-ending scroll that adds to the bottom and subtracts from the top so you never get to the bottom of a page, among other problems. It took me several minutes just to figure out how to contact them to tell them something.

Someone should ask Larry Harnisch if he'd like to get involved. He still works for the Times and this would make a nice blog entry for him. By the way, great find. great. Heck man, Harry Chandler's steamer trunk could be in there.

Current photo, just tweeted courtesy of the Times' historic Tumblr blogger Matt Ballinger. Looks like some bites have been taken out since Hunter took his aerial photo on Thursday.

It's the beginning of the end of traditional websites, as the LA Times site has now been optimized for touch screen tablet browsing. The mouse has been replaced by fingers.

Ouch, looks like a good quarter of it is already gone. If any of you are near, go over there tomorrow and get pics before it's too late!

I've been Googling for a good picture and this is what I came up with:

From a gsjansen post WAY back in the thread.

Looks like the third Times Building was on that corner spot, from 1912 to 1938.

So, what do you think? Is that the basement of the 1912 Times building in the new photo? I'm thinking that it is. I guess they just tore it down to ground level in 1938 and left the rest!

Edit: One more photo:

Does the color photo in er's post show the remains of this?:

Hmmm...I wonder if I didn't jump the gun on the Times basement idea, now that I see the two floors in esotouric's shot. But why would the north wall of the new underground garage have been angled?

That's a good question. Was it angled because they were building on a previous foundation that was angled?
(i.e. the Times bldg.) -wishful thinking I know.

..but I'm also puzzled by the ramps in the illustration flyingwedge posted. So the only entrance to the underground garage
was on the far side of the State Building? There were no other entrances or exits? -is that correct?

FredH, I never noticed that 'Love Nest' sign. -perhaps it's a movie advertisement. -good eye.

Possibly this Buster Keaton short from 1923:

Would KO be Keith Orpheum before the Radio was added?

Cheers,

Garden of Allah Novels companion map of Los Angeles and Hollywood

I thought people who regularly hang out here might like to see this map I’ve been working on with a friend, Dave DeCaro from Davelandweb.com
I write a series of novels set in and around the Garden of Allah Hotel which stood on Sunset Blvd from 1927 to 1959 during Hollywood’s heyday. For a while I’ve wanted to put together a map of LA/Hollywood showing where the major points of interest were, and where my characters (both fictional and real) frequented. But the design and software skills necessary to put something like that together were far beyond my pay grade. I was mentioning my I-have-a-map-dream to Dave—he has a terrific map of Disneyland which I've long admired ( http://davelandweb.com/disneyland/ ) and he suggested we work on one together. This is the result. You can find a list with the places, addresses and dates on my website: http://bit.ly/1iQhiMv

While looking for pictures of the State Building's Broadway entrance ramp shown in Flyingwedge's LAT diagram, I came across this picture from 1939.

USC Digital Library

A close-up shows a sign for J. S. Metzger & Son, the contractors named in the LAT article.

Detail of picture above.

There must've been dozens of proposed schemes for the Civic Center over the years, and I'm sure we've seen most of them here. This one from 1950 (previously posted by westcork in post #3062) shows a virtual twin for the State Building. The full description is:

Photograph of a drawing with the caption "Sketch showing unification of Superior and Municipal Courts as proposed by Supervisor Leonard Roach". "Civil Center pattern -- Supervisor Leonard Roach will submit plans for a 20-story building (A) to house Superior and Municipal Courts and a Law Library. Also included in his plans, the Hall of Records would be razed and replaced with a $5,000,000 county administration building (B). Existing buildings are Hall of Justice (1), Federal Building (2), City Hall (3), and State Building (4). Building A would cost $14,650,000 instead of 17,453,809 for three separate buildings" -- clipping dated "Apr. 27, 1950" attached to verso.; Streetscape. Horizontal photography.

apparently this master plan for the unification of civic center included a bass pro shops outdoor world on the West side of the Superior and Municipal Courts and Law Library building due to the presence of what appears to be a circular fishin' hole complete with marina and boat launch ramp........
